Overview

SIST EN 13329:2016+A1:2017/FprA2:2021 is a comprehensive European standard developed by CEN, specifying the requirements, specifications, and test methods for laminate floor coverings. These laminates feature a surface layer based on aminoplastic thermosetting resins, which provide enhanced durability and performance. The standard addresses both domestic and commercial use scenarios, including domestic kitchens, while explicitly excluding areas subject to frequent wetting such as bathrooms, laundry rooms, and saunas unless authorized by the manufacturer.

This standard ensures manufacturers and consumers have a clear classification and understanding of laminate flooring's suitability for various use levels, enabling quality assurance and informed purchasing decisions.

Key Topics

  • Surface Layer Composition
Focuses on laminate elements with a surface layer composed of aminoplastic thermosetting resins, known for their resilience and durability.

  • Classification System
Utilizes a classification aligned with EN ISO 10874 to define levels of use, based on domestic and commercial application intensities:

    • Classes 21-23 for domestic moderate to heavy use
    • Classes 31-34 for commercial moderate to very heavy use
  • Performance Requirements
Includes test methods and minimum performance values for:

    • Abrasion resistance (AC1 to AC6 levels)
    • Impact resistance (small and large ball tests per EN 17368 and EN 438)
    • Resistance to staining
    • Effects of furniture legs and castor chairs
    • Thickness swelling limits after moisture exposure
    • Locking strength of laminate joints
    • Surface soundness and dimensional stability
  • Test Methodology Updates
Revision prA2:2020 introduces refined definitions, modified classification tables, and updated impact resistance testing methods including the large ball impact resistance test to ensure consistent and realistic evaluation of laminate durability.

  • Installation and Use Guidelines
Emphasizes that laminate flooring is generally intended for floating installations and may only be used in wet areas if explicitly approved by manufacturers under detailed installation instructions.

Applications

EN 13329 laminate flooring standards are critical for:

  • Manufacturers
To design and test laminate floors ensuring compliance with rigorous European performance standards, enhancing product reliability and market acceptance.

  • Architects and Designers
To specify laminate floor coverings suitable for varying levels of traffic in both residential and commercial environments, balancing aesthetics with durability.

  • Contractors and Installers
To follow reliable classifications and installation guidelines ensuring the performance and longevity of laminate flooring in different usage areas.

  • Consumers and Facility Managers
To make informed choices about laminate flooring products best suited to their environment’s wear and tear, improving satisfaction and long-term value.

Related Standards

  • EN ISO 10874
Classification of floor coverings by their usage and abrasion resistance levels, foundational to EN 13329’s level of use system.

  • EN 438 Series
Determination of resistance to impact, staining, and scratching of high-pressure laminates, referenced for large ball impact testing in EN 13329.

  • EN 13756
Defines core materials made of wood for laminate flooring, referenced in substrate definitions for EN 13329 compliance.

  • EN 424, EN 425, ISO 24336, ISO 24334, ISO 24339
Various test methods for furniture leg impact resistance, castor chair tests, swelling, locking strength, and dimensional stability.

By adhering to the SIST EN 13329:2016+A1:2017/FprA2:2021 standard, stakeholders ensure laminate floorings meet recognized European benchmarks, guaranteeing durability, safety, and performance suitable for real-world applications across residential and commercial spaces.
