Abstract

ISO 20482:2013 specifies a standard test method for determining the ability of metallic sheets and strips having a thickness from 0,1 mm up to 2 mm and a width of 90 mm or greater to undergo plastic deformation in stretch forming.
For materials that are thicker and when only narrower strips are available, tools of specified dimensions are provided, in which case subscripts are used, as shown in Table 1.

Overview

prEN ISO 20482: Metallic materials - Sheet and strip - Erichsen cupping test (ISO/DIS 20482:2026) establishes a standardized test method for assessing the plastic deformability of metallic sheet and strip materials. Developed by CEN and ISO, this standard targets metallic products with a thickness between 0.1 mm and 2 mm and a width of 90 mm or greater. It provides detailed requirements for both standard and specially dimensioned test pieces, making it valuable for quality control and research in sheet metal forming industries.

The Erichsen cupping test is widely used to determine the ability of metal sheets and strips to withstand stretch forming without failure. This test is essential for manufacturers, suppliers, and users of metallic sheet and strip materials who need reliable data on material ductility and forming capabilities.

Key Topics

  • Scope of Application: Applies to metallic sheets and strips with thickness from 0.1 mm to 2 mm and width of at least 90 mm. Provisions are also made for thicker and/or narrower strips, thanks to defined tool dimensions and relevant subscripts.
  • Test Principle: A spherical punch presses into a clamped test piece until a through crack forms. The depth of the indentation at fracture provides the Erichsen cupping index (IE), a direct measure of material formability.
  • Test Equipment: Specifies the dimensions and tolerances for punch, die, blank holder, and the necessary rigidity of equipment. Includes requirements for measuring devices with division as fine as 0.1 mm.
  • Preparation of Test Pieces: Details criteria for sample flatness, absence of burrs or distortions, and avoidance of pre-test working that could influence results.
  • Test Conditions: Standard test environment is 10°C to 35°C, with controlled conditions at 23±5°C as required.
  • Lubrication: Use of graphite grease (with characteristics meeting ISO-L-XCCHB 2 or agreed alternatives) is mandated for accurate results, minimizing friction.
  • Reporting: Requires detailed test reports, including reference to ISO 20482, material identification, test conditions, lubricant used, individual and average cupping index values, and the appearance of the test piece after rupture.

Applications

The Erichsen cupping test specified in prEN ISO 20482 plays a crucial role in:

  • Quality Control: Ensuring consistent ductility and stretch formability in production lots of automotive, appliance, and construction sheet metals.
  • Material Selection: Assisting engineers and designers in comparing and selecting metallic materials for forming operations.
  • Process Optimization: Supporting forming process improvements in press shops by providing reliable data for finite element simulations and die design.
  • Product Development: Verifying the suitability of new metallic alloys or coatings for deep drawing, stamping, or other sheet forming applications.
  • Compliance and Certification: Meeting industry or customer specifications that reference ISO or EN standards for mechanical testing of metals.

Related Standards

Organizations implementing prEN ISO 20482 may also benefit from awareness of these related standards:

  • ISO 3290-1: Rolling bearings - Balls - Part 1: Steel balls. Referenced for the use of hardened bearings in place of standard punches.
  • ISO 21920-2: Geometrical product specifications (GPS) - Surface texture: Profile - Part 2: Terms, definitions, and surface texture parameters. Used for specifying punch surface finish.
  • ISO 6743-9: Lubricants, industrial oils and related products - Classification (for grease).
  • Other Mechanical Testing Standards: Such as ISO 6892 (tensile testing) and EN 10139 (cold rolled strip), which may be used in tandem for comprehensive material characterization.

By adhering to the procedures set by prEN ISO 20482, organizations can ensure harmonized and reliable assessment of metallic sheet and strip formability, supporting efficient manufacturing and consistent product quality across global supply chains.

— ISO 21920-2 has been added as referenced document in 6.4.2;
— ISO 3290-1 has been added as referenced document in 6.9;
— a clarification regarding an example composition of the graphite grease is added in 9.2 and Annex A;
— Additional specifications are given, if a sudden drop in force is used rather than the visual appearance of
the crack in 9.6
— Information are given about the rounding of the h readings and about decimal places regarding product
standards or special agreements.
— “by the parties involved” has been added in e) and f) of 10;
— “(IE, IE , IE , IE , depending on the bore diameter d used for the tests) and each of the individual
