Overview

EN ISO 15749-5:2004 is an international standard developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and ratified by the European Committee for Standardization (CEN). It specifically addresses the planning and design of drainage systems on ships and marine structures with a focus on the gravity-operated conveyance of grey water. This grey water originates from various on-board areas including weather decks, non-weathertight spaces, ro-ro spaces, cargo spaces, and swimming pools.

This standard supports maritime engineers, shipbuilders, and marine system designers in ensuring efficient, safe, and compliant drainage solutions that prevent water accumulation and promote vessel safety and hygiene.

Key Topics

  • Scope of Drainage Systems: Covers drainage from exposed decks, cargo holds, ro-ro and vehicle decks, swimming pools, and non-weathertight spaces.
  • Gravity Drainage Principle: Emphasizes gravity-operated drain line design for effective wastewater conveyance without the need for pumps or treatment plants.
  • Material Specifications: Details on steel piping types, dimensions, and wall thickness suited for marine drainage environments.
  • Drainage Capacity & Pipe Sizing: Provides guidance on nominal bore sizes from 40mm to 150mm and their corresponding drainage capacities (up to 13.8 liters/second).
  • Design of Drain Lines & Shut-off Fittings: Requirements for non-return valves, shut-off fittings, and prevention of backflow are addressed, referencing Part 4 of ISO 15749.
  • Special Conditions for Cargo Holds and Swimming Pools: Procedures to ensure drainage under ship list conditions, including collector tanks with alarms and emergency drainage protocols.
  • Wastewater Discharge Locations: Guidelines on situating discharge outlets to avoid contamination risks near gangways or lifeboat launch areas.

Applications

EN ISO 15749-5:2004 is essential for:

  • Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering: Designing compliant drainage systems adapted to various sea vessel types including passenger ships, cargo ships, and ro-ro ferries.
  • Maintenance and Retrofit of Drainage Systems: Upgrading drainage infrastructure on existing ships and marine structures to adhere to international standards.
  • Environmental Compliance: Properly managing grey water discharge in line with MARPOL regulations and preventing pollution of sensitive marine environments.
  • Safety Management: Ensuring that drainage prevents water accumulation on decks, minimizing hazards such as slipping and structural damage.
  • Design of Swimming Pools on Ships: Addressing both exposed and indoor pool drainage by ensuring direct overboard discharge or closed systems with appropriate fittings.

Related Standards

EN ISO 15749-5:2004 forms part of a comprehensive series on marine drainage systems:

  • ISO 15749-1: Sanitary drainage-system design – foundational planning principles.
  • ISO 15749-2 & 15749-3: Drain piping for gravity and vacuum systems – cover sewage and blackwater drainage.
  • ISO 15749-4: Sanitary drainage and sewage disposal pipes – includes detailed shut-off devices and fittings.
  • ISO 65, ISO 4200, ISO 9329-1, ISO 9330-1: Standards that define steel pipe types, technical delivery, and dimensions referenced for drainage piping materials.

By implementing EN ISO 15749-5:2004, shipbuilders and marine designers ensure reliable, durable, and standardized drainage systems that contribute to vessel operational safety and environmental stewardship. This standard is a critical asset for maritime professionals involved in the engineering and maintenance of onboard water management infrastructure.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies
(ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO
technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been
established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and
non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the
International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2.
The main task of technical committees is to prepare International Standards. Draft International Standards
adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an
International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of patent
rights. ISO shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
ISO 15749-5 was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 8, Ships and marine technology, Subcommittee
SC 3, Piping and machinery.
ISO 15749 consists of the following parts, under the general title Ships and marine technology — Drainage
systems on ships and marine structures:
