Shower trays - Connecting dimensions
This European Standard specifies requirements for the connecting dimensions for shower trays, regardless of the material used for their manufacture.
This European Standard applies to shower trays used for domestic purposes and complements the standards for shower trays made from different materials, the existing standard on waste fittings (EN 274-1) in terms of their dimensional requirements.
NOTE Only dimensions are compulsory. The shape of the appliance in the figures is for illustration only; it in no way
prejudices the shape of the appliance which is left to the initiative of the manufacturer.

Overview
EN 251:2012 is a European Standard developed by CEN that specifies the connecting dimensions for shower trays used in domestic settings. This standard applies irrespective of the materials used in manufacturing the trays, ensuring uniformity in critical dimensions to allow compatibility between shower trays and waste fittings. It complements material-specific standards for shower trays and the existing standard on waste fittings (EN 274-1).
The standard focuses exclusively on dimensional requirements, leaving the shape and design of shower trays open to manufacturer innovation. Its latest version, published in 2012, replaces the earlier EN 251:2003 with more detailed requirements on waste control gauges.
Key Topics
Basic Connecting Dimensions: Defines essential measurements such as the vertical and horizontal distances between the waste outlet hole and overflow hole, the floor clearance of the waste outlet, and spillover positions. These dimensions ensure standard fitting compatibility.
Waste Outlet Hole Dimensions: Specifies the diameter of the waste outlet hole and other key parameters like the sealing surface thickness, control gauge contact diameter, and angles, guaranteeing precise fitting with standardized waste fittings (per EN 274-1).
Clearance Requirements: Stipulates the required radius of the installation-free zone around the waste outlet hole and limits on reinforcing material thickness around the hole to facilitate proper waste fitting installation.
Overflow Hole Specifications: Details diameters and clearances for the overflow hole area, including the flat gasket mounting surface, the surrounding clearance dimensions, and material thickness requirements, ensuring effective overflow water management.
Control Gauge Testing: Provides a method using control gauges to verify that the waste outlet hole dimensions comply with the standard. It guides fit verification through physical testing criteria like contact circumferences and vertical alignment.
Applications
Domestic Shower Trays: EN 251:2012 directly applies to shower trays intended for household bathrooms. It ensures these are compatible with standardized plumbing waste fittings, simplifying installation and maintenance.
Manufacturing and Quality Control: Manufacturers use this standard to design shower trays with consistent connecting dimensions, facilitating product interchangeability and reducing customer installation issues.
Plumbing and Installation: Installers benefit from guaranteed dimensional compatibility between shower trays and waste fittings, reducing installation time and risk of leaks or misalignment.
Regulatory Compliance: Compliance with EN 251:2012 is critical for manufacturers aiming to market shower trays within European Union countries, where member states implement the standard as national standards.
Related Standards
EN 274-1: Waste fittings for sanitary appliances – Part 1: Requirements. This standard complements EN 251 by defining requirements for the waste fittings that connect to shower trays.
Material-Specific Shower Tray Standards: Existing standards describing physical and performance characteristics of shower trays made from materials such as acrylic, ceramic, or stone resin, which work in conjunction with EN 251's dimensional criteria.
Plumbing Standards: Broader plumbing and sanitary installation standards that regulate water disposal, drainage, and fixture installation practices.
