Overview

EN ISO 4126-7:2013/A1:2016 is an important amendment to the international standard ISO 4126-7:2013, focusing on safety devices for protection against excessive pressure. This part 7 of the ISO 4126 series addresses the incorporation and use of common data relevant to pressure protection equipment. Published and endorsed by the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) in 2016, this amendment updates key technical data and calculation methods to enhance reliability and safety in pressure safety device applications.

This standard is pivotal for manufacturers, engineers, and safety professionals involved in pressure relief systems across industrial sectors. It ensures that devices like safety valves and bursting discs operate effectively to prevent overpressure scenarios that could lead to equipment failure or hazardous incidents.

Key Topics

  • Common Data for Safety Devices
The amendment refines general data used in designing and testing safety devices against excessive pressure, standardizing parameters for accurate and consistent device performance.

  • Updated Calculations and Formulas
The document revises key calculation formulas, including flow area and capacity calculations for safety valves handling gaseous media under critical flow conditions. For example, it updates the coefficient calculation formula and provides a detailed example for nitrogen gas.

  • Compressibility Factor Estimation
Introduction of an updated estimating chart (Figure 1) for the compressibility factor (Z), which is critical for precise flow capacity calculations of gases in safety devices.

  • Technical Committee Collaboration
Prepared by ISO/TC 185 in cooperation with CEN/TC 69, the amendment reflects harmonized inputs from experts in safety devices and industrial valves, ensuring widespread applicability in Europe and internationally.

  • Patent Rights & Compliance
Attention is given to potential patent rights involved in standard elements. The amendment supports compliance with EU directives, making it essential for national standard adoption across CEN member countries.

Applications

EN ISO 4126-7:2013/A1:2016 is extensively applied in:

  • Industrial Valves and Safety Relief Systems
Designing and certifying safety valves, bursting discs, and other protective devices used in process industries such as petrochemical, chemical manufacturing, and power generation.

  • Pressure Vessel Safety
Ensuring protective devices accurately respond to pressure surges, maintaining vessel integrity by adhering to standardized formulas and data.

  • Equipment Certification and Testing
Providing a technical basis for manufacturers and testing bodies to validate performance parameters and ensure conformity with European and international safety standards.

  • Engineering Design and Risk Assessment
Equipping engineers with reliable calculation methods to size and select pressure safety devices, critical for system safety and compliance with legal requirements.

Related Standards

This amendment complements the ISO 4126 series covering various aspects of pressure safety devices:

  • ISO 4126-1 – Safety devices for protection against excessive pressure - Part 1: Safety valves
  • ISO 4126-2 – Safety devices for protection against excessive pressure - Part 2: Bursting discs
  • ISO 4126-3 – Safety devices for protection against excessive pressure - Part 3: Qualification testing of bursting disc safety devices
  • ISO 4126-4 – Safety devices for protection against excessive pressure - Part 4: Characteristics and application of pilot-operated safety valves
  • ISO 4126-8 – Safety devices for protection against excessive pressure - Part 8: Safety valves with spring-loaded or contained pilot valves

Together, these standards form a comprehensive framework guiding the design, selection, testing, and application of pressure safety devices, fostering industrial safety and operational efficiency globally.
