Classification of environmental conditions - Part 2-3: Environmental conditions appearing in nature - Air pressure
IEC 60721-2-3:2013 presents a selection of different values of air pressure appearing in nature. It is intended to be used as part of the background material when selecting appropriate severities of air pressure for product applications, which products are liable to be exposed during storage, transportation and use. This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition, published in 1987, and constitutes a technical revision. The main changes with regard to the previous edition are as follows: - removal of figures for decreasing cooling efficiency for altitude; - simplification of Table 1; - additional formula for calculating air pressure from altitude.

Klasifikacija okoljskih pogojev - 2-3. del: Okoljski pogoji v naravi - Zračni tlak (IEC 60721-2-3:2013)

Overview
EN 60721-2-3:2014 (identical to IEC 60721-2-3:2013) is a European/IEC standard for the classification of environmental conditions - air pressure. It provides a selection of naturally occurring air pressure values and background material to help manufacturers, test laboratories and designers select appropriate air-pressure severities for products during storage, transportation and use. This second edition replaces the 1987 edition and includes a simplified table of standard pressures and an additional formula to calculate pressure from altitude.
Key topics
- Scope and purpose
- Presents representative air-pressure values occurring above and below sea level for environmental classification and test planning.
- Air-pressure effects on products
- Low pressure (high altitude) can cause: leakage of gasketed containers, rupture of pressurized vessels, changes in material behaviour, arcing/corona effects (Paschen’s law), reduced convective heat dissipation and accelerated volatilization of lubricants/plasticizers.
- High pressure (natural depressions, mines) can produce mechanical stress on sealed containers.
- Standard values
- Normal sea-level pressure: 101.325 kPa.
- Example values from Table 1 (rounded): 15 000 m = 12.0 kPa, 10 000 m = 26.6 kPa, 8 000 m = 35.6 kPa, 6 000 m = 47.2 kPa, 4 000 m = 61.6 kPa, 0 m (sea level) = 101.3 kPa, –400 m = 106.2 kPa.
- Altitude–pressure relations
- Includes formulas to compute air pressure from altitude (two regimes: below 11 000 m and 11 000–20 000 m) and defines parameters used (p0, p1, L, T0, T1, g, R).
- Notable editorial changes
- Removal of altitude-related cooling-efficiency figures, simplification of Table 1, and addition of the altitude-pressure formula.
Applications
- Product design & qualification
- Set environmental severity levels for electronics, pressure vessels, seals, HVAC and aerospace components.
- Environmental testing & certification
- Define test conditions for storage, transit and operational use in laboratories and certification programs.
- Risk assessment & logistics
- Inform packaging and transport specifications for goods moving through high-altitude locations or deep depressions.
- Thermal and electrical analysis
- Account for reduced convective cooling and altered dielectric breakdown behaviour at reduced pressures.
Who should use this standard
- Manufacturers of electrotechnical and mechanical products
- Environmental test laboratories and conformity assessment bodies
- Design engineers, test engineers and product qualification teams
- Logistics and packaging specialists dealing with altitude-exposed transport
