EN 60335-2-55:2003 (based on IEC 60335-2-55:2002) is the European particular requirements standard for the safety of electrical appliances for use with aquariums and garden ponds. It applies to household and similar appliances with a rated voltage not exceeding 250 V. The standard supplements and modifies the general requirements of EN 60335-1 to address hazards specific to aquarium and pond equipment.

Approved by CENELEC on 2003-05-01, EN 60335-2-55:2003 replaces the 1997 edition and must be used together with EN 60335-1. It aligns product safety requirements with the EU Low Voltage Directive (73/23/EEC); risks from mechanical moving parts were assessed and found to be mainly electrical in origin (Machinery Directive 98/37/EC not generally applicable).
