Overview

EN 60335-2-55:2003 (based on IEC 60335-2-55:2002) is the European particular requirements standard for the safety of electrical appliances for use with aquariums and garden ponds. It applies to household and similar appliances with a rated voltage not exceeding 250 V. The standard supplements and modifies the general requirements of EN 60335-1 to address hazards specific to aquarium and pond equipment.

Approved by CENELEC on 2003-05-01, EN 60335-2-55:2003 replaces the 1997 edition and must be used together with EN 60335-1. It aligns product safety requirements with the EU Low Voltage Directive (73/23/EEC); risks from mechanical moving parts were assessed and found to be mainly electrical in origin (Machinery Directive 98/37/EC not generally applicable).

Key topics and requirements

  • Scope and applicability: Household and similar electrical appliances for aquariums and garden ponds, rated ≤ 250 V.
  • Particular safety requirements: Supplements EN 60335-1 with clauses specific to aquatic-use appliances - addressing design, construction and testing measures needed to reduce electrical hazards in wet environments.
  • Examples covered: Aerators, aquarium heaters, automatic food dispensers, sludge-suction appliances.
  • Interface with EN 60335-1: When Part 2‑55 does not alter a subclause of Part 1, the corresponding Part 1 requirement applies.
  • Regulatory alignment: Confirms coverage under the Low Voltage Directive; notes that essential safety aspects of the Machinery Directive are addressed where relevant.
  • Standardization details: Numbering and amendment rules for additional clauses and annexes (used when supplementing Part 1).

Applications

  • Ensuring electrical safety for consumer aquarium and garden-pond products during design, prototype testing and production.
  • Supporting CE marking and market access in CENELEC member countries by demonstrating conformity with European safety requirements.
  • Defining test requirements and documentation for product safety files used by manufacturers and conformity assessment bodies.

Who uses this standard

  • Product designers and electrical engineers for aquarium/pond appliances
  • Manufacturers and contract test laboratories
  • Certification bodies, conformity assessors and regulators
  • Compliance officers, procurement specialists and safety managers responsible for CE compliance and product risk assessments

Related standards and directives
