EN 61811-1:2015/A2:2026 is a CENELEC amendment to the European Standard for electromechanical telecom elementary relays of assessed quality. It updates the generic specification and blank detail specification so manufacturers, test laboratories and specifiers use the same relay construction definition, test voltages and detail-specification template. The amendment adopts IEC 61811-1:2015/AMD2:2026 without modification.
What does EN 61811-1:2015/A2:2026 specify?
EN 61811-1:2015/A2:2026 specifies changes to EN 61811-1:2015 for electromechanical telecom elementary relays of assessed quality. In practice, it adds one relay construction type, updates the characteristic test values in Annex B, and expands the blank detail specification example in Annex C.
| Annex | What it covers |
|---|---|
| Annex B | Characteristic values of the relay, including dielectric and impulse test voltages |
| Annex C | Blank detail specification and example front pages, including a new Type 5 example |
The amendment text is organized around Clause 3 and Annexes B and C. That tells readers where the new relay type is defined, where the revised test levels are listed, and where the detail-specification example is shown.
What are the key requirements of EN 61811-1:2015/A2:2026?
EN 61811-1:2015/A2:2026 mainly changes the relay type definition and the test values used to assess it. It matters because these updates affect product design, qualification testing and the content of detail specifications.
New relay construction type in Clause 3
Clause 3 adds a new relay construction type 5: two change-over contacts on a 9.1 mm x 4.9 mm maximum base. For manufacturers, this creates a named construction option that can be specified and tested under the standard.
Revised dielectric test voltages in Annex B
Annex B replaces Table B.1 with updated dielectric test voltages for types 0 to 5. The table covers opened contact circuits, adjacent contact circuits, coil to contact circuits and, where applicable, separated windings. In practice, this is the test set that shows whether insulation between relay parts is adequate for the intended construction.
Revised impulse test voltages in Annex B
Annex B also replaces Table B.2 with updated impulse test voltages. The table assigns pulse-shape test conditions for opened contact circuits, adjacent contact circuits and coil to contact circuits. For test engineers, this means the relay must withstand the specified impulse conditions during qualification or verification.
Expanded blank detail specification in Annex C
Annex C updates the front-page layout for detail specifications and adds a Type 5 example. The example shows the expected description of the relay, its construction, its application statement, coil data, contact data and climatic category. That helps users prepare a consistent detail specification instead of inventing their own format.
Practical detail points in the Type 5 example
The Type 5 example in Annex C describes a dual-in-line relay with a plastic sealed case and gives the intended mounting styles, including printed circuit boards and surface mounting technology (SMT) where applicable. It also states the relay is for telecommunication applications and may also suit control or switching functions in industrial and other applications. For buyers and designers, this clarifies the intended use context of the new construction type.
What terms does EN 61811-1:2015/A2:2026 define?
- Type 5 - A relay construction type with two change-over contacts and a 9.1 mm x 4.9 mm maximum base.
- Generic specification - The common specification framework that applies across relay variants before a product-specific detail specification is written.
- Blank detail specification - A template for writing the product-specific detail specification for a relay type.
- Change-over contacts - Contacts that switch between one circuit path and another.
- SMT - Surface mounting technology, used here for relays mounted directly on printed circuit boards.
- a.c. - Alternating current, used in the test-voltage and contact-rating tables.
- d.c. - Direct current, used in the test-voltage and contact-rating tables.
- IEC - International Electrotechnical Commission, the body that published the amended international standard.
Who uses EN 61811-1:2015/A2:2026?
EN 61811-1:2015/A2:2026 is used by relay manufacturers, component specifiers, test laboratories, quality managers and purchasers of telecom relays. Manufacturers use it to define a relay construction and prepare a detail specification. Test labs use it to apply the correct dielectric and impulse test levels. Buyers and quality staff use it when checking whether a relay is specified for telecommunication, PCB-based control or switching applications.
What changed in EN 61811-1:2015/A2:2026 from the previous edition?
EN 61811-1:2015/A2:2026 is Amendment 2 to EN 61811-1:2015. The amendment adds Type 5, replaces the dielectric test voltage table in Annex B, replaces the impulse test voltage table in Annex B, and adds a Type 5 front-page example in Annex C.
Which standards are used with EN 61811-1:2015/A2:2026?
The Type 5 front-page example in Annex C cites IEC 61810-1, IEC 61810-2 and IEC 61810-7 as related component standards. It also uses IEC 60068-1 for the component climatic category. The European amendment is based on IEC 61811-1:2015/AMD2:2026, which CENELEC approved without modification.
What does the EN 61811-1:2015/A2:2026 document contain?
EN 61811-1:2015/A2:2026 contains a short amendment foreword, the new Type 5 definition in Clause 3, revised characteristic-value tables in Annex B, and revised blank detail specification examples in Annex C. The annex material is the part most readers will use for design and testing because it shows the relay type, the test voltages and the detail-specification layout. The document also includes an example front page with the key to the layout, plus example fields for construction, application, coil data, contact data and climatic category.

AMENDMENT 2
FOREWORD
1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote international
co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To this end and
in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications, Technical Reports,
Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as "IEC Publication(s)"). Their
preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt with
may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising
with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely with the International Organization for
Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between the two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
interested IEC National Committees.
3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National
Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC
Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any
misinterpretation by any end user.
4) In order to promote international uniformity, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC Publications
transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional publications. Any divergence between
any IEC Publication and the corresponding national or regional publication shall be clearly indicated in the latter.
5) IEC itself does not provide any attestation of conformity. Independent certification bodies provide conformity
assessment services and, in some areas, access to IEC marks of conformity. IEC is not responsible for any
services carried out by independent certification bodies.
