Household and similar electrical appliances - Safety - Part 2-32: Particular requirements for massage appliances

IEC 60335-2-32:2019 is available as IEC 60335-2-32:2019 RLV which contains the International Standard and its Redline version, showing all changes of the technical content compared to the previous edition.
IEC 60335-2-32:2019 deals with the safety of electric massage appliances for household and similar purposes, their rated voltage being not more than 250 V for single phase appliances and 480 V for other appliances. Examples of appliances within the scope of this standard are:
- foot massagers;
- water filled foot massagers;
- hand-held massagers;
- massage beds;
- massage belts;
- massage chairs;
- massage pads.
Appliances not intended for normal household use but that nevertheless may be a source of danger to the public, such as appliances intended to be used by laymen in shops, in light industry and on farms, are within the scope of this standard. As far as is practicable, this standard deals with the common hazards presented by appliances that are encountered by all persons in and around the home. However, in general, it does not take into account:
- persons (including children) whose physical, sensory or mental capabilities or lack of experience and knowledge prevents them from using the appliance safely without supervision or instruction;
- children playing with the appliance.
Attention is drawn to the fact that:
- for appliances intended to be used in vehicles or on board ships or aircraft, additional requirements can be necessary;
- in many countries additional requirements are specified by the national health authorities, the national authorities responsible for the protection of labour and similar authorities.
This standard does not apply to
- appliances intended exclusively for industrial purposes;
- appliances intended to be used in locations where special conditions prevail, such as the presence of a corrosive or explosive atmosphere (dust, vapour or gas);
- electric foot care appliances that do not contain motors and other electric appliances for the care of skin or hair (IEC 60335-2-23)
- electric appliances for beauty care of persons and intended for household, commercial and similar purposes (IEC 60335-2-115).
This fifth edition cancels and replaces the fourth edition published in 2002, Amendment 1: 2008 and Amendment 2:2013. This edition constitutes a technical revision.
This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition:
- aligns the text with IEC 60335-1, Ed 5, and its Amendments 1 and 2;
- note is converted to normative text (11.8);
- additional requirements for temperatures of external accessible surfaces (Clause 11);
- alternative stability requirements for hand-held appliances (20.2);
- new mechanical strength test for hand-held appliances (21.1, 21.101).
This part 2 is to be used in conjunction with the latest edition of IEC 60335-1 and its amendments. It was established on the basis of the fifth edition (2010) of that standard.

- appareils de massage des pieds;
- appareils de massage des pieds remplis d’eau;
- appareils de massage portatifs;
- lits de massage;
- ceintures de massage;
- chaises de massage;
- des personnes (y compris des enfants) dont les capacités physiques, sensorielles ou mentales ou le manque d’expérience et de connaissance les empêchent d’utiliser l’appareil en toute sécurité sans surveillance ou instruction;
- pour les appareils destinés à être utilisés dans des véhicules ou à bord de navires ou d'avions, des exigences supplémentaires peuvent être nécessaires;
- aux appareils exclusivement destinés à un usage industriel;
- aux appareils destinés à être utilisés dans des locaux présentant des conditions particulières, telles que la présence d'une atmosphère corrosive ou explosive (poussières, vapeur ou gaz);
- aux appareils électriques de soins des pieds sans moteur et aux autres appareils électriques de soins de la peau ou des cheveux (IEC 60335-2-23);
- alignement du texte sur l’IEC 60335-1, Ed 5 et ses Amendements 1 et 2;
- conversion d’une note en texte normatif (11.8);
- ajout d’exigences relatives aux surfaces accessibles extérieures (Article 11);
- ajout d’exigences de stabilité alternatives relatives aux appareils portatifs (20.2);

FOREWORD
1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote
international co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To
this end and in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications,
Technical Reports, Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as “IEC
Publication(s)”). Their preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested
in the subject dealt with may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-
governmental organizations liaising with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely
with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by
agreement between the two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
interested IEC National Committees.
3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National
Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC
Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any
misinterpretation by any end user.
4) In order to promote international uniformity, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC Publications
transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional publications. Any divergence
between any IEC Publication and the corresponding national or regional publication shall be clearly indicated in
the latter.
5) IEC itself does not provide any attestation of conformity. Independent certification bodies provide conformity
assessment services and, in some areas, access to IEC marks of conformity. IEC is not responsible for any
services carried out by independent certification bodies.
6) All users should ensure that they have the latest edition of this publication.
7) No liability shall attach to IEC or its directors, employees, servants or agents including individual experts and
members of its technical committees and IEC National Committees for any personal injury, property damage or
other damage of any nature whatsoever, whether direct or indirect, or for costs (including legal fees) and
expenses arising out of the publication, use of, or reliance upon, this IEC Publication or any other IEC
Publications.
8) Attention is drawn to the Normative references cited in this publication. Use of the referenced publications is
indispensable for the correct application of this publication.
9) Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this IEC Publication may be the subject of
patent rights. IEC shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
This redline version of the official IEC Standard allows the user to identify the changes
made to the previous edition. A vertical bar appears in the margin wherever a change
has been made. Additions are in green text, deletions are in strikethrough red text.
