Overview

IEC 61995-2:2009/AMD1:2016 is an international amendment published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that updates Part 2 of IEC 61995. This part focuses on devices for the connection of luminaires used in household and similar settings, specifically detailing the standard sheets for dedicated connection luminaires (DCL). The amendment refines technical requirements and standard dimensions to ensure safe, reliable, and interchangeable luminaires connection devices globally.

The IEC 61995 series primarily addresses the interfaces between luminaires and their connection devices, safeguarding electrical compatibility, mechanical robustness, and user safety. Amendment 1 (2016) enhances the original 2009 publication by updating dimensional drawings, retention mechanisms, withdrawal forces, and relevant compliance clauses aligned with IEC 61995-1:2016.

Key Topics

  • Scope and Compliance
Devices covered under IEC 61995-2 must comply with all relevant requirements of IEC 61995-1:2016. This includes classification, testing, and information provisions as established in the base standard.

  • Retention Force Requirements
The amendment specifies that the force required to withdraw a plug with the locking mechanism enabled shall be no less than 10 Newtons (N) to secure safe connections during use. Notably, in Norway (NO) and Sweden (SE), this withdrawal force must not exceed 50 N.

  • Standard Sheets for DCL Devices
The document replaces the previous standard sheets 1-1, 1-2, and 1-3 with updated drawings illustrating essential dimensions for DCL outlets and plugs rated at 6 A, 250 V alternating current (2 poles plus earth). These details improve interchangeability and manufacturing consistency.

  • Design and Manufacturing Notes
The amendment provides design guidance such as pin shape chamfering, resilience requirements for specific plug parts, dimensional limits (e.g., maximum depth for flush-mounted DCL outlets), and retention means to comply with locking and unlocking criteria.

  • Multilingual Documentation
Both English and French versions of all provisions and illustrations are included, reflecting the IEC's global reach and facilitating wider adoption.

Applications

IEC 61995-2:2009/AMD1:2016 applies to a variety of applications involving the connection of household and similar luminaires through dedicated connection points. Key practical applications include:

  • Residential Lighting Installations
Ensures that luminaires connecting devices provide safe, standardized interfaces compatible with household electrical systems worldwide.

  • Replacement and Upgrade of Lighting Accessories
Standardized dimensions enable manufacturers and electricians to easily replace or upgrade luminaires without compatibility issues.

  • Electrical Accessory Manufacturing
Guides manufacturers in producing DCL plugs and outlets that meet stringent safety and interchangeability standards, supporting product certification and market access.

  • Building and Electrical Code Compliance
Provides essential reference for regulatory bodies and inspection authorities in verifying that luminaires connection devices meet international safety standards.

Related Standards

  • IEC 61995-1:2016
Part 1 of IEC 61995 defines the general requirements, classification, and test methods for devices connecting luminaires, forming the foundation for Part 2’s technical sheets.

  • IEC 60364 Series
General standards on electrical installations in buildings, often aligned with IEC 61995 series for lighting equipment and connections.

  • IEC 60529
Degrees of protection provided by enclosures (IP Code), relevant when considering safety and durability of luminaire connection devices in different environments.

  • International Electrotechnical Vocabulary (IEV)
Offers standardized terminologies related to electrical devices, assisting users in understanding precise meanings and applications of terms found within IEC 61995-2.
