(Main)Pneumatic fluid power — Cylinders — Single-rod short-stroke cylinders, 1 000 kPa (10 bar) series, bores from 20 mm to 100 mm
General Information
- Abstract
This International Standard establishes a metric series of single-rod pneumatic short‑stroke cylinders with bores from 20 mm to 100 mm (inclusive) for use at maximum working pressure of 1 000 kPa [10 bar 1)] with and without magnetic function. They are not equipped with adjustable cushioning, so their application is restricted to those systems where adjustable cushioning is not required.

ISO/PRF 15524 - Pneumatic fluid power — Cylinders — Single-rod short-stroke cylinders, 1 000 kPa (10 bar) series, bores from 20 mm to 100 mm
REDLINE ISO/PRF 15524 - Pneumatic fluid power — Cylinders — Single-rod short-stroke cylinders, 1 000 kPa (10 bar) series, bores from 20 mm to 100 mm
Overview
ISO 15524:2026 specifies the requirements for pneumatic fluid power cylinders-specifically, single-rod short-stroke cylinders that operate at a maximum working pressure of 1,000 kPa (10 bar) and have bore sizes ranging from 20 mm to 100 mm (inclusive). This international standard ensures a consistent metric series, covering both magnetic and non-magnetic function options. The cylinders addressed are not equipped with adjustable cushioning, meaning their application is intended for systems where such a function is not necessary.
By standardizing critical aspects such as bore sizes, strokes, mounting types, and dimensions, ISO 15524 promotes component interchangeability and enhances compatibility within pneumatic systems across various industries.
Key Topics
Scope and Applicability
- Covers single-rod, short-stroke pneumatic cylinders
- Max working pressure: 1,000 kPa (10 bar)
- Bore sizes: 20 mm to 100 mm, inclusive
- Suitable for environments where adjustable cushioning is not required
Design Features
- Supports both with and without magnetic function configurations
- Standardized nominal stroke values as per ISO 4393
- Specific nominal stroke tolerances defined for each bore size
- External threaded rod end dimensions included as a reference (Annex A)
Mounting Types
- MB1: Body, through bolt hole
- MX8: Head and cap, tapped
- MX9: Body, through two bolt holes and both ends tapped
- All mounting options are in accordance with ISO 6099 for orderly installation and system integration
Terminology and References
- Definitions are aligned with ISO 5598
- References key standards for bores, strokes, and port connections (e.g., ISO 3320, ISO 4393, ISO 16030)
Applications
ISO 15524 cylinders are integral to many pneumatic fluid power systems, particularly where compact, reliable actuation is needed without the need for adjustable cushioning. Their applications include:
- Industrial automation: For rapid, short linear motions in assembly lines, pick-and-place systems, and packaging machinery
- Material handling: Used in sorting, conveying, and transfer systems where space constraints are critical
- Robotics: Ideal for grippers and end-effectors requiring consistent stroke and force within defined limits
- Automotive manufacturing: For fixtures, clamping, and positioning in automated production systems
- Process equipment: Used in valves, dampers, and gating mechanisms due to their consistent performance under specified pressure and bore conditions
The standard's metric dimensions and defined mounting options ensure easy replacement, interoperability, and maintenance across global equipment platforms.
Related Standards
ISO 15524 is closely connected to several other ISO pneumatic cylinder and fluid power standards, including:
- ISO 3320: Cylinder bores and piston rod diameters and area ratios - Metric series
- ISO 4393: Basic series of piston strokes for cylinders
- ISO 5598: Vocabulary for fluid power systems and components
- ISO 6099: Identification codes for cylinder mounting dimensions and mounting types
- ISO 16030: Pneumatic fluid power-Connections-Ports and stud ends
Following ISO 15524 in conjunction with these related standards guarantees a high level of system compatibility, component interchangeability, and compliance with international best practices in pneumatic cylinder integration.

are standardized in some countries. Therefore, the dimensions of an external threaded rod end were
added to Annex A as reference.

Introduction
In pneumatic fluid power systems, power is transmitted and controlled through a gas under pressure within
a circuit.
One component of such systems is the pneumatic fluid power cylinder. This is a device that converts power
into linear mechanical force and motion. It consists of a movable element, i.e. a piston and piston rod, operating
within a cylindrical bore.
