Abstract

This document establishes a metric series of single-rod pneumatic short‑stroke cylinders with bores from 20 mm to 100 mm (inclusive) for use at a maximum working pressure of 1 000 kPa [10 bar1)] with and without magnetic function. They are not equipped with adjustable cushioning, so their application is restricted to those systems where adjustable cushioning is not required. 1) 1 bar = 100 kPa = 105 Pa; 1 Pa = 1 N/m2.

Overview

ISO 15524:2026 is an ISO standard for pneumatic fluid power cylinders that defines a metric series of single-rod short-stroke cylinders with bores from 20 mm to 100 mm. It applies to cylinders designed for a maximum working pressure of 1 000 kPa (10 bar) and covers versions with or without magnetic function.

This standard is especially useful where compact linear motion is needed in pneumatic systems and where adjustable cushioning is not required. By setting a clear dimensional framework, ISO 15524:2026 helps support consistent design, ordering, and interchangeability across fluid power applications.

The 2026 edition is a technical revision of the earlier 2011 version and includes an informative annex addressing external threaded rod end dimensions as a reference.

Key Topics

ISO 15524:2026 focuses on the practical standardization of short-stroke pneumatic cylinders and related mounting and dimensioning rules. Key topics include:

  • Bore sizes in a defined metric series: 20, 25, 32, 40, 50, 63, 80, and 100 mm
  • Nominal stroke selection based on recommended values from ISO 4393
  • Maximum stroke length guidance, limited to applications that fit the short-stroke design
  • Basic cylinder dimensions and mounting configurations
  • Mounting types identified in accordance with ISO 6099
  • Ordering designation examples for clear specification in procurement and catalogues
  • Identification statements for test reports, sales literature, and product documentation

The document also includes an informative annex on external threaded rod ends, which supports users who need reference dimensions for cylinder integration.

Applications

ISO 15524:2026 is relevant for manufacturers, system integrators, engineers, and buyers working with pneumatic cylinders in industrial automation and machinery. Typical use cases include:

  • Compact linear motion systems
  • Machine and equipment design requiring standardized cylinder dimensions
  • Pneumatic assemblies where magnetic sensing may be needed
  • Applications that do not require adjustable cushioning
  • Catalog specification and product comparison in the fluid power industry

Because the standard provides a common dimensional basis, it helps improve compatibility between components and supports efficient selection of single-rod short-stroke cylinders for industrial pneumatic systems.

Related Standards

ISO 15524:2026 references several important standards that support its use:

  • ISO 3320 - cylinder bores and piston rod diameters, metric series
  • ISO 4393 - basic series of piston strokes
  • ISO 5598 - fluid power vocabulary
  • ISO 6099 - identification code for mounting dimensions and mounting types
  • ISO 16030 - pneumatic connections, ports and stud ends

These related ISO standards provide the terminology, dimensional framework, and connection rules needed to apply ISO 15524:2026 consistently in pneumatic fluid power systems.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards
bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through
ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee
has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations,
governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely
with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
The procedures used to develop this document and those intended for its further maintenance are described
in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 1. In particular, the different approval criteria needed for the different types
of ISO documents should be noted. This document was drafted in accordance with the editorial rules of the
ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2 (see www.iso.org/directives).
ISO draws attention to the possibility that the implementation of this document may involve the use of (a)

This document was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 131, Fluid power systems, Subcommittee SC 3,
Cylinders.
This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition (ISO 15524:2011), which has been technically
revised.
The main changes are as follows:
— Addition of Annex A to reflect the state of the art: in the current market, many cylinders of an external
threaded rod end are available other than cylinders of an internal threaded rod end. Also, their standards
are standardized in some countries. Therefore, the dimensions of an external threaded rod end were
added to Annex A as reference.
