Paper and board — Determination of grease resistance — Part 2: Surface repellency test

ISO16532-2:2007 specifies a method for the determination of grease resistance of paper and board. Primarily, it is intended to establish an approximate level of grease resistance, by testing the degree of surface repellency and/or antiwicking characteristics of paper and board, internally or surface sized with organophobic materials such as fluorocarbons. Some packaging paper and board products, designed for containing pet foods, food for human consumption and other materials, are produced in this way, and any surface stains, due to grease wetting or penetrating the paper or board surface, are aesthetically unacceptable. This test is not intended to determine the permeability of grease through the paper or board, for which ISO 16532-1 applies.

Overview

ISO 16532-2:2007 specifies a surface repellency test to determine the grease resistance of paper and board. The method establishes an approximate level of grease resistance by assessing surface repellency and anti-wicking behavior of materials that are internally or surface sized with organophobic treatments (for example, fluorocarbons). It is intended for applications where surface staining from fats, oils or greases is aesthetically unacceptable (e.g., food and pet-food packaging). This part covers the kit-drop test only - it does not measure grease permeability through the sheet (see ISO 16532-1 for permeability testing).

• Sampling & conditioning: Sample selection per ISO 186; condition samples at 23 °C ±1 °C and 50 % ±2 % RH (ISO 187).
• Test pieces & procedure: Cut at least ten pieces (≥50 × 150 mm). Carry out at least five determinations per side: from ~10 mm height release a drop, time 15 s, wipe excess, inspect immediately for darkening. Determine Kit rating for each piece and compute the mean (rounded to the nearest even number), plus min/max.
• Precision: Repeatability and reproducibility were evaluated in an interlaboratory study; mid-range Kit ratings show greater interlaboratory variability due to subjective end-point detection.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies
(ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO
technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been

Introduction
The resistance to the penetration of fats, greases and oils by paper and board is of particular importance for
certain packaging purposes, for example the packaging of food. The packaging should not only provide an
effective grease barrier, but should also deter the formation of aesthetically unacceptable grease spots on the
packaging surfaces.

1 Scope
This part of ISO 16532 specifies a method for the determination of the grease resistance of paper and board.
Primarily, it is intended to establish an approximate level of grease resistance, by testing the degree of surface

Introduction
La résistance à la pénétration des matières grasses, des graisses et des huiles qui caractérise le papier et le
carton est particulièrement importante au regard de certaines applications d’emballage telles que l’emballage
des denrées alimentaires. Il convient que l’emballage fasse non seulement effectivement barrage aux
graisses mais qu’il prévienne également la formation de taches de graisse inacceptables du point de vue
esthétique à la surface des emballages.

Введение
Стойкость бумаги и картона к проникновению жиров, масел и смазок имеет большое значение для
определенных задач по упаковыванию, например, упаковыванию пищевых продуктов. Упаковка не
только должна обеспечить надежную защиту от проникновения жира, но также сохранить товар от

ПРЕДУПРЕЖДЕНИЕ — Метод, установленный в данной части ISO 16532, включает применение
опасных химических веществ, которые являются сильно воспламеняющимися и опасными для
здоровья. Необходимо следить за соблюдением правил техники безопасности.
1 Область применения
Данная часть ISO 16532 устанавливает метод определения жиростойкости бумаги и картона. Этот
метод, в первую очередь предназначен для установления примерного уровня жиростойкости путем
определения отталкивающей способности поверхности и/или капиллярных свойств бумаги и картона,
пропитанных изнутри или по поверхности органофобными материалами, например, фтороуглеродами.
Некоторые типы упаковочной бумаги и картона, предназначенные для корма домашним животным,
пищевых продуктов для потребления человеком и другие материалы производятся подобным образом,
и пятна на поверхности в результате смачивания жирами или жиропроницаемости поверхности бумаги
и картона эстетически неприемлемо.
Данное испытание предназначено для определения степени проникновения жира через бумагу или
картон, которые подпадают по международный стандарт ISO 16532-1.
