Includes more than 40 definitions of terms used to describe artificial limbs, the anatomy of those parts of the human body and the personal and procedures involved in the practice of prosthetics and orthotics. It does not apply to breast or other external prostheses, dental prostheses or internal ones.

La présente partie de l'ISO 8549 définit les termes généraux utilisés pour décrire ces prothèses et orthèses, l'anatomie des parties du corps humain les plus souvent appareillées, ainsi que le personnel et les méthodes nécessaires à la pratique de l'appareillage. Elle ne s'applique pas aux prothèses de sein ou autres prothèses externes utilisées pour remplacer d'autres parties du corps humain, ni aux prothèses ou orthèses dentaires et ni aux prothèses et orthèses internes. Elle ne s'applique pas également aux orthèses qui ne concernent que des segments de membre (c'est-à-dire les orthèses utilisées dans le traitement des fractures et dans la médecine sportive). Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of
national Standards bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International
Standards is normally carried out through ISO technical committees. Esch member
body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been established has
the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, govern-
mental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO
collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all
matters of electrotechnical standardization.
Draft International Standards adopted by the technical committees are circulated to
the member bodies for approval before their acceptance as International Standards by
the ISO Council. They are approved in accordance with ISO procedures requiring at
least 75 % approval by the member bodies voting.
International Standard ISO 8549-1 was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 168,
Prosthetics and ortho tics.

des Normes internationales est en general confiee aux comites techniques de I’ISO.
