Overview
ISO 14962:1997 - "Space data and information transfer systems - ASCII encoded English" formalizes the use of ASCII-encoded English for exchange of textual data in space systems. It adopts CCSDS 643.0-B-1 (November 1992) and defines the character set, control-character interpretation and presentation rules so that human-readable English content (descriptions, labels, tables, figures, logs) is consistently encoded, transmitted and displayed across spacecraft and ground systems.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Adoption of CCSDS recommendation: ISO 14962 incorporates CCSDS 643.0‑B‑1 as the normative reference for ASCII encoded English in space data systems.
- Character set: Use of 7‑bit ASCII characters embedded in an 8‑bit field (most significant bit set to zero), consistent with ISO/IEC 646:1991.
- ADID identifier: The language/format identifier used is ADID = CCSD0002 (ASCII encoded English).
- Inactive/shaded characters: Certain ASCII positions are designated as without effect for presentation; these characters should not be displayed or printed.
- Control-character presentation rules:
- Line termination is standardized: interpreted from combinations of CR (carriage return) and LF (line feed) in defined ways (CR alone, LF alone, CR+LF, LF+CR as specified).
- Horizontal tab (HT) advances to the next tab stop at multiples of 8 character positions (0, 8, 16, 24, ...).
- Form feed (FF) moves to the top of the next page/screen; page length is device-defined.
- Devices may need to adjust presentation when device constraints (e.g., line length) conflict with data layout.
- Presentation guidance: For data where fixed alignment matters (tables, ASCII art), a fixed‑width font is recommended.
Applications and who uses it
ISO 14962 is intended for use by organizations and professionals involved in space data exchange and interoperability, including:
- Spacecraft systems engineers and mission architects
- Ground-segment developers and telemetry/telecommand software teams
- Data format designers using Standard Formatted Data Units (SFDU)
- Instrument teams creating human-readable metadata, logs and reports
- Standards bodies and agencies coordinating multi-agency missions (NASA, ESA, CNES, etc.)
Typical practical uses:
- Encoding human-readable fields in mission data packets and SFDU payloads
- Ensuring consistent rendering of ASCII tables, logs and diagnostic output across heterogeneous platforms
- Facilitating international interoperability and archival of mission textual data

Foreword
IS0 (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide
federation of national standards bodies (IS0 member bodies). The work of
preparing International Standards is normally carried out through IS0
technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which
a technical committee has been established has the right to be represented
on that committee. International organizations, governmental and non-
governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. IS0
collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission
(IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization”
Draft International Standards adopted by the technical committees are
circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an International
Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting
a vote.
International Standard IS0 14962 was prepared by Technical Committee

CCSDS Recommendation for ASCII Encoded English
FOREWORD
This document is a technical Recommendation for the standardisation of the use of ASCII Encoded
English as a data description language for the interchange of digital space-related data in an open
data system and has been prepared by the Consultative Committee for Space Data Systems
(CCSDS).
This Recommendation defines the usage of ASCII Encoded English and its representation as a data
description language. It allows implementing organisations within each Agency to proceed
coherently with the development of compatible derived Standards for space data systems and
widely dispersed data users that are within their cognisance.
Through the process of normal evolution, it is expected that expansion, deletion, or modification
to this document may occur. This Recommendation is therefore subject to CCSDS document
management and change control procedures which are defined in Reference [l].
Questi ons relating to the contents or status of this document should be addressed to the CCSDS

STATEMENT OF INTENT
The Consultative Committee for Space Data Systems (CCSDS) is an organisation officially
established by the management of the member space Agencies. The Committee meets periodically
to address data system problems that are common to all participants, and to formulate sound
technical solutions to these problems. Inasmuch as participation in the CCSDS is completely
voluntary, the agreements of the Committee are termed RECOMMENDATIONS and are not
considered binding to any Agency.
This Recommendation is issued by, and represents the consensus of, the CCSDS Plenary body.
Agency endorsement of the Recommendation is entirely voluntary.
Endorsement, however,
indicates the following understandings:
Whenever an Agency establishes a CCSDS-related Standard, this Standard
will be in accord with the relevant Recommendation.
Establishing such a
Standard does not preclude other provisions which an Agency may develop.
