Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national
standards bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally
carried out through ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which
a technical committee has been established has the right to be represented on that committee.
International organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part
in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all
matters of electrotechnical standardization.
The procedures used to develop this document and those intended for its further maintenance are
described in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 1. In particular the different approval criteria needed for
the different types of ISO documents should be noted. This document was drafted in accordance
with the editorial rules of the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2 (see www.iso.org/directives).
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject
of patent rights. ISO shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent
rights. Details of any patent rights identified during the development of the document will be in the
Introduction and/or on the ISO list of patent declarations received (see www.iso.org/patents).
Any trade name used in this document is information given for the convenience of users and does
not constitute an endorsement.
For an explanation on the meaning of ISO specific terms and expressions related to conformity
assessment, as well as information about ISO's adherence to the WTO principles in the Technical
Barriers to Trade (TBT) see the following URL: Foreword - Supplementary information
The committee responsible for this document is ISO/TC 8, Ships and marine technology,
Subcommittee SC 1, Lifesaving and fire protection.
ISO 24409 consists of the following parts, under the general title Ships and marine technology —
Design, location and use of shipboard safety signs and fire control plan signs, safety notices and
safety markings:
— Part 1: Design principles
— Part 2: Catalogue of shipboard safety signs and fire control plan signs
— Part 3: Code of practice

ISO 24409-2:2017(E)
Introduction
The growth of international travel by ship has created a need to provide people travelling and
working on-board ships with signs and associated systems that communicate consistent and
effective information. This part of ISO 24409 specifies a system of safety and fire control plan signs
on ships and other marine installations that is generally consistent with standardized signs with
which many will have gained familiarity in other applications.
As such, this part of ISO 24409 clarifies and supplements existing requirements set out in SOLAS
regulations II-2/13.3.2.5.1, III/9.2.3, III/11.5, III/20.10, and ISO 17631. However, it is directly
applicable to shipboard safety and fire control plan signs only, and does not deal with graphical
symbols to be used on shipboard plans or documentation.
This part of ISO 24409 contains a catalogue of safety signs developed in accordance with the
general design principles specified in Part 1, for application on ships in accordance with the code of
practice in Part 3.

IMPORTANT — The colours represented in this part of ISO 24409 can be neither viewed on
screen nor printed as true representations. Although the signs and symbols in this part of
ISO 24409 have been reproduced to correspond (with an acceptable tolerance as judged by
the naked eye) to the requirements of ISO 3864-4, it is not intended that the signs and
symbols shown in this part of 24409 be used for colour matching.
For a definitive version of all safety symbols in this part of ISO 24409, please consult ISO
7010 and the ISO Online Browsing Platform (http://www.iso.org/obp/ui/). For a definitive
version of all fire control symbols in this part of ISO 24409, please consult ISO 17631. These
are the source documents from which to create safety and fire control plans signs.
All symbols utilized in the mandatory actions for lifesaving equipment signs in table 2 of this
part of ISO 24409 have been incorporated from IMO Resolution A.760(18). Note that these
symbols are included in the ISO Online Browsing Platform.
No changes shall be made in the ISO source documents to affecting ISO 24409 without first
consulting the responsible ISO subcommittee (ISO TC8/SC1) for ISO 24409.
1 Scope
This part of ISO 24409 catalogues standardized safety signs and fire control plan signs for use on
board ships. Each sign in this part of ISO 24409 is categorized and indexed according to the
message it conveys. This part of ISO 24409 also includes signs which require supplementary text
signs to improve comprehension. Though the signs in this catalogue will largely remain static, new
signs will be added as requirements are identified and corresponding safety signs and fire control
plan signs are developed and standardised.
2 Normative references
The following documents, in whole or in part, are normatively referenced in this document and are
indispensable for its application. For dated references, only the edition cited applies. For undated

the following apply.
3.1
fire control signs
Signs for specialists, used to identify and locate fire control equipment, not designed according the
rules for safety signs
Note 1 to entry: These signs are related to the symbols in ISO 17631; see 4.1 h) below.
3.2
image content
written description of the elements of a graphical symbol or safety sign and their relative disposition
3.3
referent
idea or object that a graphical symbol is intended to represent
3.4
safety sign
sign giving a general safety message, obtained by a combination of a colour and geometric shape
and which, by the addition of a graphical symbol, gives a particular safety message
4 Categorization of shipboard signs
4.1 Signs in this standard are categorized according to their function as follows.
a) MES is the category for means of escape signs which provide escape route identification.
b) EES is the category for emergency equipment signs which provide use and location of first aid
facilities and portable safety equipment.
c) LSS is the category for life saving systems and appliances signs which provide use and location
of life saving systems and appliances.
d) FES is the category for fire-fighting equipment signs which provide use and location of fire-
fighting equipment.
e) PSS is the category for prohibition signs which provide prohibited actions.
f) WSS is the category for hazard warning signs which provide identification of hazards to avoid.
g) MSS is the category for mandatory action signs which provide mandatory notices and
instructions.
NOTE The PSS, WSS and MSS categories are based on the P, W and M categories of ISO 7010.
ISO 24409-2:2017(E)
h) SIS is the category for safety and operating instructions for trained personnel.
4.2 Table 1 summarizes the standardized shipboard safety signs used in workplaces and public
areas in terms of functional category, referent number, referent, graphical symbol as well as
geometric shape and colour in accordance with the design principles in ISO 24409-1.
