This document provides a framework of voice user interfaces (VUI) for personal mobility services (PMS). The users of PMS ride personal mobility devices (PMD), which are empowered by electricity or a human, and interact with the PMS through the VUI (see Annex A) attached to the PMD. This document describes the functional requirements, the performance requirements and the procedure of the VUI. This document is applicable to a VUI attached to a PMD, which can be used for interaction between users and the PMD.

Foreword

Introduction
Personal mobility (PM) devices such as e-bikes, e-scooters and e-kickboards are becoming popular. A PM
device is operated by a single driver at a low speed (i.e. less than 25 km/h). It is mainly used to transport
short-distance commuters in cities. It is regarded as a part of environmentally friendly and integrated
transportation systems in the cities.
Many PM services such as navigation and guidance are provided to the PM device users in the cities. The PM
service can be used to support safety and convenience of the users during their driving PM devices. The PM
services can provide information of traffic, parking, environment, tourism, etc.
The users can safely control and interact with the PM services through voice user interfaces (VUI). Since the
users drive their PM devices using their hands, the VUI can be used to assure their safe driving. It follows
that voice commands are main tools to communicate with the PM services while the users are driving their
PM devices.

1 Scope
This document provides a framework of voice user interfaces (VUI) for personal mobility services (PMS).
The users of PMS ride personal mobility devices (PMD), which are empowered by electricity or a human, and
interact with the PMS through the VUI (see Annex A) attached to the PMD.
This document describes the functional requirements, the performance requirements and the procedure of
the VUI. This document is applicable to a VUI attached to a PMD, which can be used for interaction between
users and the PMD.

4 Personal mobility service
A personal mobility (PM) device is a compact personal transporter such as an e-bike or e-kickboard. It is
used in urban environments as a mode of transportation for commuting, shopping, delivering, sightseeing,
recreating, etc.
PM device users are mostly connected to communication networks through their smart phones or ICT
devices attached to the PM device. Various PM services can be provided via the networks to support safety,
convenience, pleasure and comfort of the PM device users.
Some PM services include:
— navigation: finding a way to destination;
— environment: providing road, traffic, weather information, etc.;
— guidance: providing proper information and guidance for commuters, athletes, tourists, delivery
drivers, etc.;
— system status: reporting time, distance, speed, battery, etc.;
— emergency: handling emergency situations.

5.1 General

Figure 1 illustrates a conceptual overview of PM service for PM device users through VUI. The PM device
users utilize PM service through their smart phones or ICT devices attached to their PM devices where the
PM services are executed. The PM device users interact with the PM service through VUI. Voice commands
are used to control the PM service through the VUI. Feedback and information from the PM services can
be delivered through either the VUI or other types of user interfaces (e.g. displays, augmented reality (AR)
goggles), or both, if necessary. The location-based information (GNSS), the internet communication and the
database access are utilized.
5.2 Procedure of interacting with VUI

Figure 2 depicts a common procedure of interacting with VUI for PM service. An operational process of
interacting with VUI for PM service in Figure 2 includes the following steps:
— Step 1: acquiring and receiving speech from a user as inputs for VUI. The speech can be a voice command
or a meaningful sentence reflecting user’s intentions.
— Step 2: the speech is transformed into text through the automatic speech recognition (ASR) module.
— Step 3: the result from the ASR module is recognized as a voice command used for executing PM service.
— Step 4 (optional): the result from the ASR module can be a natural language sentence and used for
abstracting and analysing the user’s intention through the natural language understanding (NLU) module.
— Step 5 (optional): the semantics from the NLU module can be transmitted to the PM service execution
module in case of understanding the natural language sentence.
