Foreword

ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies (ISO

member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO technical

committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been established has

the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in

liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical

Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.

International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 3.

The main task of technical committees is to prepare International Standards. Draft International Standards adopted

by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an International

Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.

ISO 8548-6 was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 168, Prosthetics and Orthotics.

ISO 8548 consists of the following parts, under the general title Prosthetics and orthotics — Limb deficiencies:

 Part 1: Method of describing limb deficiencies present at birth
 Part 2: Method of describing lower limb amputation stumps
 Part 3: Method of describing upper limb amputation stumps
 Part 4: Description of causal conditions leading to amputation

 Part 5: Method of describing the clinical condition of the patient who has had an amputation

 Part 6: Method of describing the person to be treated with an orthosis, the clinical objectives of treatment, and

the functional requirements of the orthosis

Introduction

The orthotic treatment of a person depends not only on the causes and underlying conditions that the orthosis is

being prescribed for, but also other clinical conditions and attributes of the person. The various members of the

clinic teams in different countries develop their own nomenclature to record this information. Hence there is a need

for an international system to allow comparisons of clinical practice.

The system is designed to meet the needs of the members of the clinic team in assessing the person and

presenting and evaluating treatment. Such a system will also allow this information to be recorded in a way which

can easily be incorporated into reports and used for analysis. It would also be of value to epidemiologists and

government health officials.
ISO 8548-6 defines the minimum information to be described.

1 Scope

This part of ISO 8548 establishes a method of describing the person to be treated with an orthosis, the clinical

objectives of treatment and the functional requirements of the orthosis.
2 Normative references

The following normative documents contain provisions which, through reference in this text, constitute provisions of

this part of ISO 8548. For dated references, subsequent amendments to, or revisions of, any of these publications

do not apply. However, parties to agreements based on this part of ISO 8548 are encouraged to investigate the

possibility of applying the most recent editions of the normative documents indicated below. For undated

references, the latest edition of the normative document referred to applies. Members of ISO and IEC maintain

registers of currently valid International Standards.

L'ISO (Organisation internationale de normalisation) est une fédération mondiale d'organismes nationaux de

normalisation (comités membres de l'ISO). L'élaboration des Normes internationales est en général confiée aux

comités techniques de l'ISO. Chaque comité membre intéressé par une étude a le droit de faire partie du comité

technique créé à cet effet. Les organisations internationales, gouvernementales et non gouvernementales, en

liaison avec l'ISO participent également aux travaux. L'ISO collabore étroitement avec la Commission

électrotechnique internationale (CEI) en ce qui concerne la normalisation électrotechnique.

Les Normes internationales sont rédigées conformément aux règles données dans les Directives ISO/CEI,

Introduction

Le traitement orthotique d’une personne dépend non seulement des causes et du contexte dans lesquelles

l’orthèse a été prescrite, mais d’autres conditions cliniques et attributs de la personne. Les divers membres des

équipes cliniques de différents pays mettent au point des nomenclatures qui satisfont à leurs propres besoins pour

noter ces informations. Il est par conséquent nécessaire de mettre au point un système international qui permette

de comparer les pratiques cliniques.

Ce système est conçu pour satisfaire les besoins des membres de l’équipe clinique en évaluant la personne ainsi

qu’en présentant et en évaluant le traitement. Un tel système permet d’enregistrer ces informations de façon telle

qu’elles puissent être aisément intégrées dans des rapports et utilisée pour des analyses. Un tel système serait

également d’une grande utilité pour les épidémiologistes et hauts responsables gouvernementaux du secteur de la

santé.
L’ISO 8548-6 définit le minimum d’informations à décrire.

1 Domaine d'application

La présente partie de l’ISO 8548 établit une méthode permettant de décrire la personne à traiter avec une orthèse,

les objectifs cliniques du traitement et les exigences fonctionnelles de l’orthèse.

2 Références normatives

Les documents normatifs suivants contiennent des dispositions qui, par suite de la référence qui y est faite,

constituent des dispositions valables pour la présente partie de l'ISO 8548. Pour les références datées, les

amendements ultérieurs ou les révisions de ces publications ne s’appliquent pas. Toutefois, les parties prenantes

aux accords fondés sur la présente partie de l'ISO 8548 sont invitées à rechercher la possibilité d'appliquer les
