Overview

ISO 8734:1997 specifies the characteristics, dimensions and designation of parallel pins (dowel pins) made from hardened steel and martensitic stainless steel. It covers nominal diameters from 1 mm to 20 mm and a commercial range of nominal lengths (standard steps up to 100 mm, then larger steps as noted). The standard is intended for fasteners used for accurate location and shear-resisting assemblies where repeatability and material performance are required.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Material and heat treatment
    • Pins may be through-hardened or case-hardened steel, or martensitic stainless steel (grades referenced to ISO 3506-1).
    • Specific chemical composition limits and hardness classes are defined for the different material types.
  • Hardness
    • Through- and case-hardened requirements are given in Vickers hardness (examples in the standard: surface hardness and minimum case hardness values).
  • Dimensions and tolerances
    • Diameters from 1 to 20 mm with fit tolerance m6 are listed.
    • Nominal lengths cover many commercial sizes (3 mm, 4 mm, 5 mm, … up to 100 mm and beyond in larger steps); tolerances and nominal/min/max values are tabulated.
  • Surface and workmanship
    • Surface roughness requirement: R < 0.8 μm.
    • Pins shall be free from irregularities, detrimental defects and burrs.
    • Default supply condition: plain (natural finish) with protective lubricant, unless otherwise agreed.
  • Coating and plating
    • If plated or coated, processes must be chosen and post-treatments applied to avoid hydrogen embrittlement (see ISO 4042).
    • All dimensional tolerances apply prior to plating/coating.
  • Acceptance and inspection
    • Acceptance inspection procedures are covered by ISO 3269.
  • Designation examples
    • Through-hardened steel pin: Parallel pin ISO 8734 – 6 × 30 – A – St
    • Martensitic stainless pin: Parallel pin ISO 8734 – 6 × 30 – C1

Applications and users

ISO 8734 dowel pins are used for:

  • Precise location of mating parts in assemblies (jigs, fixtures, tooling)
  • Shear load-bearing connections in machinery
  • Automotive, aerospace, manufacturing equipment, and general mechanical design

Typical users:

  • Fastener manufacturers and heat-treaters
  • Mechanical and design engineers specifying locating features
  • Quality/inspection teams and procurement specialists

Related standards

  • ISO 3269 - Fasteners: Acceptance inspection
  • ISO 3506-1 - Corrosion-resistant stainless steel fasteners (reference for martensitic stainless material)
  • ISO 4042 - Fasteners: Electroplated coatings (plating and hydrogen embrittlement guidance)

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide
federation of national standards bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of
preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO
technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which
a technical committee has been established has the right to be represented
on that committee. International organizations, governmental and non-
governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO
collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission
(IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
Draft International Standards adopted by the technical committees are
circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an International
Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting
a vote.
International Standard ISO 8734 was prepared by Technical Committee
ISO/TC 2, Fasteners.
This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition (ISO 8734:1987),
which has been technically revised.

Avant-propos
