Introduction
The growth of international travel by ship has created a need to provide people travelling and working
on board ships with signs and associated systems that communicate consistent and effective safety
information. This document specifies a system of safety and fire control plan signs on ships and other
marine installations that is generally consistent with standardized signs, with which many have gained
familiarity in other applications.
As such, this document clarifies and supplements existing requirements set out in SOLAS regulation
[10] [8] [7]
II-2, 13.7.2.2 and III,8.4, IMO resolution A.752 (18), 4.6 and MSC /Circ.699. However, it is directly
applicable to shipboard safety signs only, and does not deal with graphical symbols to be used on
shipboard plans or documentation used for professionals.
This document spells out general design principles applicable to shipboard escape plan signs for escape
and embarkation of people on board survival crafts, other than the ones who are involved to special
safety actions. The signs are catalogued in ISO 24409-2, and their application on ships is specified in
ISO 24409-3.

1 Scope
This document establishes design principles for shipboard escape plan signs that contain information
relevant to escape, embarkation, and fire safety, to be used for general information on board ships.
These plans are intended to be displayed as signs in cabins and public areas, such as required by
regulations.
This document is not intended to cover the plans to be used by crew. The plans for crew are described
in ISO 17631.

4 Application and use
4.1 General
Escape plan signs shall be used in cabins and in public spaces. Escape plan signs used in cabins shall
indicate from the “you are here” position the primary and the secondary escape routes to the designated
assembly station. Escape plan signs used in public spaces shall give an overview of the ship’s assembly
station and embarkation stations.
Escape plan signs shall be used as general safety information.
4.2 Preparation
Before applying the design principles, the essential elements to be shown on escape plan signs shall be
determined based on the safety management procedures and ships facilities. The plans shall reflect the
study of the following information verified by site visit:
a) ”as built” drawing(s) of the ship with key features as provided by the fire control plan, means of
escape plan and lifesaving appliances plan (see ISO 17631 and/or the ship’s evacuation analyses,
according to SOLAS regulation II-2, 13.3.2.7);
b) evacuation planning documentation, any instructions given and how it is provided;
c) fire safety manuals and procedures;
d) identification of all escape routes and means of escape;

Introduction
La croissance des transports maritimes internationaux a engendré le besoin de fournir aux personnes
voyageant et travaillant à bord des navires des signaux et des systèmes connexes permettant de
communiquer des informations cohérentes et efficaces en matière de sécurité. Le présent document
spécifie un système de signaux de sécurité et de signaux relatifs à la sécurité incendie sur les navires et
autres installations maritimes, système globalement harmonisé avec les signaux normalisés, devenus
familiers pour de nombreuses personnes dans le cadre d’autres applications.
Ainsi, le présent document précise et complète les exigences actuelles énoncées dans les règles II-
[10] [8]
2, 13.7.2.2 et III,8.4 de la convention SOLAS ainsi que dans la résolution A.752 (18) , 4.6, et la
[7]
circulaire MSC/Circ.699 de l’OMI. Toutefois, il n’est directement applicable qu’aux signaux de sécurité
à bord des navires, et ne traite pas des symboles graphiques à utiliser sur les plans de bord ou dans la
documentation destinée aux professionnels.
Le présent document énonce les principes généraux de conception applicables aux signaux de plan
d’évacuation de bord pour l’évacuation et l’embarquement des personnes à bord des embarcations
de sauvetage, en dehors de celles qui sont impliquées dans des actions de sécurité spéciales. Les

4 Application et utilisation
4.1 Généralités
Les signaux de plan d’évacuation doivent être affichés dans les cabines et les zones accessibles au public.
Les signaux de plan d’évacuation affichés dans les cabines et doivent indiquer, à partir de l’emplacement
«vous êtes ici», les chemins d’évacuation principal et secondaire vers le point de rassemblement désigné.
Les signaux de plan d’évacuation affichés dans les zones accessibles au public doivent donner une vue
d’ensemble du point de rassemblement et des points d’embarquement du navire.
Les signaux de plans d’évacuation doivent servir à l’information générale en matière de sécurité.

4.2 Préparation
Préalablement à l’application des principes de conception, les éléments essentiels à faire figurer sur les
signaux de plan d’évacuation doivent être déterminés à partir des modes opératoires de gestion de la
sécurité et des installations de navires. Les plans doivent refléter la prise en compte des informations
suivantes, vérifiées par une visite sur place:
a) les «plans après construction» du navire, avec les principales caractéristiques telles que fournies
dans le plan de sécurité incendie, le plan des moyens d’évacuation et le plan des engins de sauvetage
(voir l’ISO 17631 et/ou l’analyse de l’évacuation du navire, conformément à la règle II-2, 13.3.2.7 de
la convention SOLAS);
b) les documents relatifs à la planification de l’évacuation, les instructions à donner et la manière dont
elles sont fournies;
c) les manuels et procédures relatifs à la sécurité incendie;
d) l’identification de tous les chemins d’évacuation et des moyens d’évacuation;
e) l’emplacement des équipements de secours et des dispositifs d’évacuation et d’embarquement;
f) les actions à entreprendre en cas d’urgence et les signaux d’alarme;
g) l’emplacement des points de rassemblement, des gilets de sauvetage, des canots de sauvetage et des
radeaux de sauvetage;
h) les instructions d’utilisation des gilets de sauvetage.
Les signaux de plan d’évacuation ont pour fonction d’aider les personnes à s’orienter par rapport au

Introduction
The growth of international travel by ship has created a need to provide people travelling and working
on board ships with signs and associated systems that communicate consistent and effective safety
information. This document specifies a system of safety and fire control plan signs on ships and other
marine installations that is generally consistent with standardized signs, with which many have gained
familiarity in other applications.
As such, this document clarifies and supplements existing requirements set out in SOLAS regulation
[10] [8] [7]
II-2, 13.7.2.2 and III,8.4, IMO resolution A.752 (18), 4.6 and MSC /Circ.699. However, it is directly
applicable to shipboard safety signs only, and does not deal with graphical symbols to be used on
shipboard plans or documentation used for professionals.
This document spells out general design principles applicable to shipboard escape plan signs for escape
and embarkation of people on board survival crafts, other than the ones who are involved to special
safety actions. The signs are catalogued in ISO 24409-2, and their application on ships is specified in
ISO 24409-3.

1 Scope
This document establishes design principles shipboard escape plan signs that contain information
relevant to escape, embarkation, and fire safety, to be used for general information on board ships.
These plans are intended to be displayed as signs in cabins and public areas, such as required by
regulations.
This document is not intended to cover the plans to be used by crew. The plans for crew are described
in ISO 17631.

4 Application and use
4.1 General

4. Application and use
1. General
Escape plan signs shall be used in cabins and in public spaces. Escape plan signs used in cabins shall
indicate from the “you are here” position the primary and the secondary escape routes to the designated
assembly station. Escape plan signs used in public spaces shall give an overview of the ship’s assembly
station and embarkation stations.
Escape plan signs shall be used as general safety information.
2. Preparation
Before applying the design principles, the essential elements to be shown on escape plan signs shall be
determined based on the safety management procedures and ships facilities. The plans shall reflect the
study of the following information verified by site visit:
1. a) ”as built” drawing(s) of the ship with key features as provided by the fire control plan,
means of escape plan and lifesaving appliances plan (see ISO 17631 and/or the ship’s evacuation
analyses, according to SOLAS regulation II-2, 13.23.2.7);
2. b) evacuation planning documentation, any instructions given and how it is provided;
3. c) fire safety manuals and procedures;

4. d) identification of all escape routes and means of escape;
5. e) location of emergency equipment, evacuation and embarkation aids;
6. f) required actions to be taken in case of emergency and alarm signals;
7. g) location of assembly stations, life jackets, life boats and life rafts;
8. h) instructions of use of lifejackets.
The purpose of escape plan signs is to help people orient themselves in relation to the planned escape
route to assembly stations and embarkation stations. -Design requirements
1. Content of the escape plan sign
An escape plan sign in a cabin shall display the ship's sideview and a plan view of the section where the
cabin is located and the ship’s assembly stations. The sideview shall indicate the primary and secondary
escape route from the cabin where the sign is posted to the designated assembly station. The location of
the cabin shall be indicated by the “you are here” marking. The plan view relevant to the section where
the cabin is located shall indicate the primary and the secondary escape route to get to the designated

Introduction
La croissance des transports maritimes internationaux a engendré le besoin de fournir aux personnes
voyageant et travaillant à bord des navires des signaux et des systèmes connexes permettant de
communiquer des informations cohérentes et efficaces en matière de sécurité. Le présent document
spécifie un système de signaux de sécurité et de signaux relatifs à la sécurité incendie sur les navires et
autres installations maritimes, système globalement harmonisé avec les signaux normalisés, devenus
familiers pour de nombreuses personnes dans le cadre d’autres applications.
Ainsi, le présent document précise et complète les exigences actuelles énoncées dans les règles II-
[10] [8]
2, 13.7.2.2 et III,8.4 de la convention SOLAS ainsi que dans la résolution A.752 (18) , 4.6, et la

circulaire MSC/Circ.699 de l’OMI. Toutefois, il n’est directement applicable qu’aux signaux de sécurité
à bord des navires, et ne traite pas des symboles graphiques à utiliser sur les plans de bord ou dans la
documentation destinée aux professionnels.
Le présent document énonce les principes généraux de conception applicables aux signaux de plan
d’évacuation de bord pour l’évacuation et l’embarquement des personnes à bord des embarcations
de sauvetage, en dehors de celles qui sont impliquées dans des actions de sécurité spéciales. Les
signaux sont répertoriés dans l’ISO 24409-2 et leurs applications sur les navires sont spécifiées
dans l’ISO 24409-3.

1 Domaine d’application
Le présent document établit des principes de conception pour les signaux de plan d’évacuation de bord
qui contiennent des informations relatives à l’évacuation, à l’embarquement et à la sécurité incendie, à
utiliser pour la diffusion d’informations générales à bord des navires.
Ces plans sont destinés à être affichés sous forme de signaux dans les cabines et les zones accessibles au
public, tel que requis par les règlements.
Le présent document n’est pas destiné à traiter des plans à utiliser par l’équipage. Les plans destinés à
l’équipage sont décrits dans l’ISO 17631.

4 Application et utilisation
4.1 Généralités
Les signaux de plan d’évacuation doivent être affichés dans les cabines et les zones accessibles au public.
Les signaux de plan d’évacuation affichés dans les cabines et doivent indiquer, à partir de l’emplacement
«vous êtes ici», les chemins d’évacuation principal et secondaire vers le point de rassemblement désigné.
Les signaux de plan d’évacuation affichés dans les zones accessibles au public doivent donner une vue
d’ensemble du point de rassemblement et des points d’embarquement du navire.
Les signaux de plans d’évacuation doivent servir à l’information générale en matière de sécurité.

4.2 Préparation
Préalablement à l’application des principes de conception, les éléments essentiels à faire figurer sur les
signaux de plan d’évacuation doivent être déterminés à partir des modes opératoires de gestion de la
sécurité et des installations de navires. Les plans doivent refléter la prise en compte des informations
suivantes, vérifiées par une visite sur place:
a) les «plans après construction» du navire, avec les principales caractéristiques telles que fournies
dans le plan de sécurité incendie, le plan des moyens d’évacuation et le plan des engins de sauvetage
(voir l’ISO 17631 et/ou l’analyse de l’évacuation du navire, conformément à la règle II-2, 13.23.2.7 de
la convention SOLAS);
b) les documents relatifs à la planification de l’évacuation, les instructions à donner et la manière dont
elles sont fournies;
c) les manuels et procédures relatifs à la sécurité incendie;
