FOREWORD
IS0 (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation
of national standards institutes (IS0 member bodies). The work of developing
International Standards is carried out through IS0 technical committees. Every
member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been set
up has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations,
governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work.
Draft International Standards adopted by the technical committees are circulated
to the member bodies for approval before their acceptance as International
Standards by the IS0 Council.
International Standard IS0 5778 was developed by Technical Committee ISO/TC 8,
Shipbuilding, and was circulated to the member bodies in May 1978.

1 SCOPE AND FIELD OF APPLICATION
This International Standard specifies main dimensions,
location and number of fittings, materials and quality of
manufacture for small weathertight steel hatches for
application on board ships in order to ensure interchange-
ability of the hatches. The remaining dimensions are left
to the manufacturer.
The hatches are suitable for loading operations and giving
access to storage compartments and for access to dry cargo
holds. The hatches are not suitable as an access to any kind
of tanks and may not be used as escape hatches.
These hatches generally comply with the requirements of
the International Convention on Load Lines, 1966. The
possibility for application in position 1 and position 2 has
to be considered for each situation and where necessary
the hatch covers shall be provided with additional stiffening.
The annex deals with the testing of tightness of the hatch.

1 OBJET ET DOMAINE D'APPLICATION
Dimensions en millimètres
La présente Norme internationale spécifie les dimensions
principales, l'emplacement et le nombre des dispositifs de
fermeture, les matériaux et la qualité de fabrication des
petits panneaux en acier, étanches aux intempéries, utilisés
à bord des navires en vue d'assurer l'interchangeabilité de
ces panneaux. Les dimensions non indiquées sont laissées

à l'initiative du fabricant.
Ces panneaux conviennent pour des opérations de charge-
ment et pour donner accès aux magasins et aux cales à
marchandises. Ils ne conviennent pas pour servir d'accès à
une quelconque citerne et ne peuvent être utilisés comme
panneaux de sauvetage.
Ces panneaux sont conformes en général aux règles de la
Convention internationale de 1966 sur les lignes de charges.
La possibilité de leur utilisation dans des emplacements de
la catégorie 1 et de la catégorie 2 doit être considérée pour
chaque situation et si nécessaire les couvercles des panneaux
\-- doivent être munis de renforcement additional.
L'annexe spécifie l'essai d'étanchéité du panneau.
NOTE - Les utilisateurs de la présente Norme internationale doivent
noter que tout en observant les specifications de la Norme, ils
