Foreword
IS0 (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of
national standards bodies (IS0 member bodies). The work of preparing International
Standards is normally carried out through IS0 technical committees, Each member
body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been established has
the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, govern-
mental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work.
Draft International Standards adopted by the technical committees are circulated to
the member bodies for approval before their acceptance as International Standards by
IS0 Council. They are approved in accordance with IS0 procedures requiring at
the
least 75 % approval by the member bodies voting.
International Standard IS0 578 was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 4,
Rolling bearings.
This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition (IS0 578 : 1973). In this
second edition tolerances have been incorporated for the effective width of tapered
roller bearing sub-units, tolerance class 4; consequently, additions have been made to
clauses 3 and 4 of the first edition (clauses 4 and 5 in the second edition). This second
edition also replaces the tolerances for inch series bearings specified in IS0 2349; the
tolerances for metric series bearings specified in IS0 2349 have already been incor-
porated in IS0 492. This second edition together with IS0 492 therefore cancel and
replace IS0 2349 : 1973.
Users should note that all International Standards undergo revision from time to time
and that any reference made herein to any other International Standard implies its
latest edition, unless otherwise stated.

1 Scope and field of application
This International Standard specifies the tolerances for boundary dimensions and running accuracy of tapered roller bearings of the
inch series, tolerance classes 4 (normal tolerance), 3, O and 00. In addition, it gives tolerances for the effective width of tapered rolling
bearing sub-units, tolerance class 4.
Chamfer dimension limits are given in IS0 1123.

Avant-propos
L’ISO (Organisation internationale de normalisation) est une fédération mondiale
d’organismes nationaux de normalisation (comités membres de I’ISO). L’élaboration
des Normes internationales est confiée aux comités techniques de I’ISO. Chaque
comité membre intéressé par une étude a le droit de faire partie du comité technique
créé à cet effet. Les organisations internationales, gouvernementales et non gouverne-
mentales, en liaison avec I’ISO participent également aux travaux.
Les projets de Normes internationales adoptés par les comités techniques sont soumis
aux comités membres pour approbation, avant leur acceptation comme Normes inter-
nationales par le Conseil de I’ISO. Les Normes internationales sont approuvées confor-
mément aux procédures de I’ISO qui requièrent l‘approbation de 75 % au moins des
comités membres votants.
La Norme internationale IS0 578 a été élaborée par le comité technique ISO/TC 4,
Roulements.
Cette deuxième édition annule et remplace la première édition (IS0 578 : 1973). Dans
cette deuxième édition les tolérances applicables à la largeur effective des sous-
ensembles des roulements à rouleaux coniques, classe de tolérances 4, ont été incor-
porées; par conséquent, des ajoutés ont été faits aux chapitres 3 et 4 de la première
édition (chapitres 4 et 5 de la deuxième édition). Cette deuxième édition remplace aussi
les tolérances pour roulements des séries en inches spécifiées dans I’ISO 2349; les tolé-
rances pour roulements des séries métriques ont déjà été incorporées dans I‘ISO 492.

L’attention des utilisateurs est attirée sur le fait que toutes les Normes internationales
