Overview

ISO 20310:2018 specifies requirements, classification and test methods for factory-made aluminosilicate wool (ASW) products used as thermal insulation for building equipment and industrial installations in non-refractory applications. It covers product forms such as blanket, module, felt, board, paper, textile and other forms, and defines product characteristics, sampling and conditioning, testing procedures, marking and labelling. The standard does not prescribe target performance levels for specific applications - it defines how properties are measured and reported so users can assess fitness for purpose.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Classification by temperature: Products are classified into types (Type I–VI) according to a classification temperature (see Table 1). Recommended long‑term service temperatures are typically about 150–200 °C lower than the classification temperature.
  • Permanent linear change: Measured at the classification temperature; maximum allowed permanent linear change is 4.0%.
  • Thermal conductivity (λ): Manufacturers must declare λ and provide conductivity vs temperature (typically from 200 °C up to 1 100 °C, where applicable). Measurement methods: ISO 8302 (up to 800 °C) and ISO 8894-1 / ISO 10635 (above 800 °C). Thermal conductivity testing is performed at actual measured thickness.
  • Dimensions and tolerances: Length, width and thickness tolerances are defined (see Table 2); length and width follow ISO 29465, thickness by ISO 10635.
  • Apparent density: Tolerance from nominal density ±10% (measured by ISO 10635).
  • Shot content: Shot particles >0.212 mm shall not exceed 20% of total mass.
  • Tensile strength: Minimum tensile strength requirements for blankets, felts and paper are specified in tables (by nominal density or thickness).
  • Sampling & conditioning: Minimum sample area, specimen sizes and conditioning (drying at 110 °C to constant mass) are specified.
  • Conformity & FPC: Initial type testing (ITT), factory production control (FPC) and marking/designation code requirements are included.

Applications and who uses it

ISO 20310:2018 is used by:

  • Manufacturers of aluminosilicate wool products for product specification, testing and labelling
  • Product testing laboratories performing thermal, dimensional and mechanical tests
  • Specifying engineers and consultants who need consistent, comparable property data for thermal insulation selection
  • Procurement and quality assurance teams requiring conformity evidence and factory production control
  • Insulation contractors and plant designers selecting insulation for industrial installations and building equipment (non-refractory)

Keywords: ISO 20310:2018, aluminosilicate wool, ASW, thermal insulation, thermal conductivity, industrial insulation, classification temperature, product testing.
