Overview
ISO 924:2024, titled Coal Preparation Plant – Principles and Conventions for Flowsheets, is an internationally recognized standard developed by ISO Technical Committee ISO/TC 27, covering coal and coke. This third edition, published in August 2024, provides essential principles and conventions for preparing basic process and equipment flowsheets in the design of coal preparation plants. It aims to standardize the representation of process steps and equipment involved in coal preparation, ensuring clarity, uniformity, and universal understanding across the industry.
Coal preparation plants involve multiple stages ranging from raw coal pretreatment to product storage and loading. The standard facilitates consistent illustration of these stages, helping designers, engineers, and stakeholders communicate design plans effectively and optimize plant performance.
Key Topics
Scope and Purpose
ISO 924:2024 defines uniform principles and graphical conventions for process and equipment flowsheets, vital in the design and planning phases of coal preparation plants.Types of Flowsheets
The standard specifies two primary flowsheet types:- Process Flowsheets: Highlight overall process stages using rectangles to group operations such as feed pretreatment, cleaning, product treatment, and storage.
- Equipment Flowsheets: Represent machinery and plant items using standardized symbols as per ISO 561, focusing on the physical equipment involved.
Conventions for Flow Representation
To ensure clarity and avoid misinterpretations:- Material flow lines must be horizontal or vertical, entering from the top or left and exiting at the bottom or right.
- Raw coal is depicted at the top left of flowsheets to start the flow direction toward processed products.
- Flowline junctions are marked by spots, while crossing lines without mixing remain unconnected or use loop cross-overs.
- Product sizes follow a descending order vertically, with size ranges clearly indicated in millimeters.
- Capacities and flow rates are shown with specific placement rules to differentiate design and mechanical limits.
Grouping of Operations
The process from raw coal entry to product disposition is organized under:- Pretreatment of feed coal
- Cleaning
- Subsequent product treatments (e.g., solid-liquid separation)
- Storage and loading
- Product characteristics and destination
Standard Capacity Notation
The nominal plant capacity appears in the title. Design capacities for processes and equipment are marked alongside flowlines to specify operational limits, aiding performance guarantees and project clarity.
Applications
Design and Engineering
Applying ISO 924:2024 ensures engineers create flowsheets that are clear, consistent, and globally understandable during coal preparation plant design. It aids in optimizing process flows, sizing equipment, and visualizing operational sequences.Project Communication
Standardized flowsheets support seamless communication between stakeholders including plant owners, operators, contractors, and consulting engineers by using a common graphical language and terminology based on ISO 1213-1 and ISO 561.Operational Planning
The flowsheets serve as a basis for process control design, capacity analysis, and expansion planning, accommodating future modifications or additional treatment stages indicated by characteristic lines.Training and Documentation
Uniform flowsheet conventions provide educational clarity for training personnel and documenting plant processes, reducing misunderstandings and enhancing safety.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards
bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through
ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee

Introduction
At various stages in the design of a complete plant, it is necessary to illustrate by flowsheets the process
steps covering the operations to which the raw coal will be subjected in the preparation plant. In order that
these may be more readily and universally understood, it is desirable that flowsheets should conform to a
standard pattern and that various conventions should be well understood and adopted.
