Overview
ISO 4714:2000 is an international standard developed by ISO that sets the minimum requirements for agglomerated composition cork in sheet form. This standard covers the essential technical specifications, as well as procedures for sampling, packaging, and marking of composition cork materials. ISO 4714 is crucial for manufacturers, suppliers, and users of composition cork products who require uniformity, reliability, and international recognition of material quality.
Composition cork, also known as agglomerated cork, is a sustainable material made by binding cork granules with a non-cork binder. This material is widely used due to its lightweight, resilience, and thermal and acoustic insulation properties. By adhering to ISO 4714:2000, organizations can ensure their cork sheets meet key industry requirements for performance and consistency.
Key Topics
ISO 4714:2000 standardizes the following aspects:
- Specifications: Defines minimum requirements for thickness, apparent density, tensile strength, compressibility, recovery, and resistance to boiling water of agglomerated composition cork sheets.
- Sampling: Outlines how samples are to be taken from production lots, in compliance with international sampling standards, to guarantee representative quality checks.
- Packaging: Specifies requirements for packaging materials to be moisture-resistant, ensuring the cork’s integrity during storage and transportation.
- Marking: Requirements for labeling packages with key product and manufacturer information for traceability and regulatory compliance.
Adherence to these processes not only facilitates quality assurance but also supports international trade by providing standardized criteria for cork products.
Applications
Adhering to ISO 4714:2000 is essential for industries and sectors that use composition cork. Practical applications include:
- Building and Construction: For insulation panels, underlayment, gaskets, and soundproofing materials.
- Automotive Industry: Used in seals, gaskets, and vibration damping components.
- Footwear and Fashion: Components in shoe soles and other accessories.
- Industrial Packaging: Moisture-resistant packaging material and cushioning.
- Crafts and Decoration: For functional and decorative sheet materials.
By following ISO 4714, manufacturers gain confidence that their agglomerated cork sheets will meet required specifications for durability, consistency, and safety, making them suitable for a range of demanding applications.
Related Standards
Organizations involved with agglomerated composition cork should also be aware of these related international standards:
- ISO 633: Provides vocabulary and definitions related to cork materials.
- ISO 2859-1: Details sampling procedures for inspection by attributes, which is referenced for the sampling methodology.
- ISO 7322: Specifies test methods for composition cork, including examinations of thickness, density, strength, and resilience.
Compliance with ISO 4714:2000, together with these complementary standards, ensures a comprehensive approach to the specification, testing, and quality control of composition cork products, supporting global trade and customer satisfaction in the cork industry.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies (ISO
member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO technical
committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been established has
the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in
liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical
Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 3.
Draft International Standards adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting.
Publication as an International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this International Standard may be the subject of
patent rights. ISO shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
International Standard ISO 4714 was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 87, Cork.
This second edition cancels and revises the first edition (ISO 4714:1986), which has been technically revised. The
classification of composition cork and the behaviour in boiling hydrochloric acid have been removed.
Introduction
Composition cork is a material with many different compositions and applications.
This International Standard gives the specifications required to provide its minimum characterization.
Performance requirements related to an intended use are specified in relevant International Standards.
Composition cork of low thickness may be obtained as such by direct compression or may be obtained either by
reslicing blocks or by unwinding and cutting cylindrical rolls.

Avant-propos
