(Main)Intelligent Network (IN); Intelligent Network Application Protocol (INAP); Capability Set 2 (CS2); Part 5: Distributed Functional Plane (DFP) [ITU-T Recommendation Q.1224 (1997), modified]
General Information
- Abstract
Core INAP for CS2 shall also reflect the Distributed Functional Plane (DFP), e.g. including the specification of BCSM, DP processing rules, FE modelling. The intention of this part of Core INAP for CS2 is, to endorse ITU-T Recommendation Q.1224 and to identify exceptions from Q.1224 which are valid for Core INAP for CS2. The service drivers and network aspects which are considered in order to determine the exceptions from Q.1224 are the same as described in the scope of part 1 for th eprotocol specification of core INAP for CS2, i.e. CTM, UPT, CTN, GVNS, Call Party Handling (CPH), Interworking of INAP with ISUP/DSS1. Specification of this part shall be done in close co-operation with NA 6 since modelling aspects are to be considered.

Overview
SIST EN 301 140-5:2001 is a European standard developed by SIST, aligning with the ETSI and based on the ITU-T Recommendation Q.1224 (1997) as modified. This standard specifies the Intelligent Network Application Protocol (INAP) for Capability Set 2 (CS2), focusing on the integration of the Distributed Functional Plane (DFP) within the intelligent network (IN) architecture. It defines how core INAP for CS2 should implement distributed call and service control, service invocation, management functions, and interworking with protocols such as ISUP and DSS1.
A key objective of this standard is to endorse ITU-T Recommendation Q.1224 while identifying necessary exceptions and refinements relevant for European telecommunication networks implementing INCS2 services. The document is essential for network designers, operators, and equipment vendors who wish to achieve interoperable INAP implementations that leverage distributed intelligence across telephone networks.
Key Topics
- Distributed Functional Plane (DFP): The DFP concept enables the distribution of service logic, call processing, and feature interactions across multiple network entities, supporting scalability and flexibility in the deployment of new services.
- Basic Call State Model (BCSM): Specifies the call model used in CS2, including detection points (DPs), PICs (Points in Call), and rules for call event processing within distributed functional entities.
- Functional Entities (FEs): Models core network functions such as Service Switching Function (SSF), Service Control Function (SCF), Specialized Resource Function (SRF), and Call Party Handling.
- Service and Network Management: Details the mechanisms to provide service invocation, end-user access, management, wireless access, and support for feature interactions.
- Exceptions to Q.1224: Highlights deviations and clarifications compared to ITU-T Q.1224 to align with European requirements and technology evolution.
- Interworking: Ensures compatibility between INAP for CS2 and other signaling protocols like ISUP and DSS1, which are commonly used for digital and ISDN call signaling.
- Security and User Interaction: Addresses security requirements and procedures for both in-band and out-channel user interactions.
Applications
SIST EN 301 140-5:2001 supports the development and deployment of intelligent network services within public and private telephone networks, especially where advanced call handling and distributed service logic are required:
- Telecom Operators: Enables flexible introduction of value-added telecommunication services such as number translation, prepaid calling, and virtual private networks (GVNS).
- Network Equipment Manufacturers: Facilitates the implementation of standards-compliant switches, service control points, and network management systems.
- Service Providers: Supports rapid creation and management of innovative services (e.g., call party handling, user profiling, and telecom service customization).
- Interoperability: Assists in integrating diverse network technologies and ensuring seamless information flow among different functional network components.
Related Standards
The standard directly references and works in conjunction with several other international standards for intelligent network and digital signaling, including:
- ITU-T Q.1224: Distributed functional plane for IN CS2 (source standard, with modifications).
- EN 301 140-1: Protocol specification for Core INAP CS2.
- EN 300 374-1: Core INAP for Capability Set 1 (CS1).
- ITU-T Q.931 & EN 300 403-1: Digital Subscriber Signalling System No. 1 (DSS1).
- ITU-T Q.762, Q.763: ISDN User Part (ISUP) signaling formats and parameters.
- ITU-T Q.1204, Q.1214: IN distributed functional plane architectures and models for CS1.
- ITU-T Q.1290: Glossary and supporting terminology for IN.
For network evolution, robust service delivery, and compatibility, alignment with these related standards is crucial when implementing the requirements of SIST EN 301 140-5:2001 in intelligent network platforms.
