Cable networks for television signals, sound Signals and interactive services - Part 2-3: LTE (4G) Interference Mitigation Filters

This Technical Specification provides requirements to passive filters intended to reduce RF interference from LTE Base Stations (LTE-BS) and LTE User Equipment (LTE-UE) to receiving equipment and cable distribution systems of broadcast DVB-T and DVB-T2 signals in the VHF and UHF bands. While primarily intended to be used with VHF/UHF DVB-T and DVB-T2 receivers and signal distribution systems, filters can also be useful for mitigation of interference to VHF FM or DAB radio.

Overview

SIST-TS CLC/TS 50083-2-3:2019 is a Technical Specification developed by the CENELEC (CLC) focusing on cable networks for television signals, sound signals, and interactive services. Specifically, this part addresses the requirements for passive LTE (4G) interference mitigation filters. The primary aim is to minimize radio frequency (RF) interference from LTE Base Stations (LTE-BS) and LTE User Equipment (LTE-UE) affecting broadcast DVB-T and DVB-T2 signals in the VHF and UHF bands. While intended mainly for television signal distribution systems, these LTE filters can also support the reduction of interference in VHF FM and DAB radio systems.

Key Topics

  • Passive LTE Interference Filters: The standard defines requirements for passive devices across various cable distribution scenarios to block unwanted LTE signals and protect TV reception quality.
  • Performance Characteristics:
    • Pass-band and Stop-band: Filters must allow through VHF and UHF broadcast channels while strongly attenuating LTE frequencies, especially in the 791-821 MHz (LTE-BS) and 832-862 MHz (LTE-UE) ranges.
    • Filter Classes: It specifies three classes of LTE filters suitable for professional, consumer, and typical master antenna TV (MATV) systems.
  • Installation Conditions & Connections:
    • Requirements for connectors, protective bonding, mechanical robustness, environmental protection (IP54 for outdoor use), and compliance with EMC standards.
  • Information Requirements: Guidance on the information to be provided by manufacturers or vendors, supporting correct application and installation by end-users.

Applications

  • Broadcast TV Reception: Ensures reliable DVB-T and DVB-T2 reception in residential, commercial, and communal cable systems by minimizing LTE interference.
  • FM and DAB Radio: Filters are also applicable where LTE signals may disrupt VHF FM or DAB radio equipment, enhancing their operational reliability.
  • Cable Network Infrastructure:
    • Professional installations (with distribution amplifiers and complex headends).
    • Consumer-level setups (single or small group receivers in homes).
    • MATV systems found in multiple dwelling units or shared buildings.
  • Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC): The standard helps cable network operators and installers maintain compliance with electromagnetic compatibility regulations.
  • Outdoor and Indoor Usage: The specified filters cover both environmental scenarios, ensuring robust performance whether installed internally or externally.

Related Standards

  • EN 50083-2:2012 - Cable networks for television signals, sound signals and interactive services - Part 2: Electromagnetic compatibility for equipment.
  • EN 60728 series - Standards for safety and performance in cable distribution networks for television, sound, and interactive services.
  • EN 60529:1991 (IP Code) - Classification for degrees of protection against dust and water ingress.
  • EN 61169-2 & EN 61169-24 - Specifications for RF coaxial connectors used in cable networks.

Practical Value

  • Improved Service Reliability: Correct application of LTE filters ensures uninterrupted viewing and listening experiences for customers, even in areas with strong LTE signals.
  • Simplified Regulatory Compliance: Helps operators, installers, and manufacturers meet national and international EMC requirements for cable TV and radio distribution equipment.
  • Versatile Integration: Thanks to standardized connectors and environmental ratings, these filters can be installed in diverse network environments with confidence in long-term performance.
  • Manufacturer Guidance: Clear documentation and marking requirements support proper product selection and installation by both professionals and consumers.

Introduction
Standards and deliverables of EN 60728 series and EN 50083 series deal with cable networks including
equipment and associated methods of measurement for headend reception, processing and distribution of
television and sound signals and for processing, interfacing and transmitting all kinds of data signals for
interactive services using all applicable transmission media. These signals are typically transmitted in
networks by frequency-multiplexing techniques.
This includes for instance:
a) regional and local broadband cable networks;
b) extended satellite and terrestrial television distribution systems;
c) individual satellite and terrestrial television receiving systems;
and all kinds of equipment, systems and installations used in such cable networks, distribution and receiving
systems.
The extent of this standardization work is from the antennas and/or special signal source inputs to the
headend or other interface points to the network up to the terminal input of the customer premises
equipment.
The standardization work will consider coexistence with users of the RF spectrum in wired and wireless
transmission systems.
The standardization of any user terminals (i.e. tuners, receivers, decoders, multimedia terminals etc.) as well
as of any coaxial, balanced and optical cables and accessories thereof is excluded.
1 Scope
This Technical Specification provides requirements to passive filters intended to reduce RF interference from
LTE Base Stations (LTE-BS) and LTE User Equipment (LTE-UE) to receiving equipment and cable
distribution systems of broadcast DVB-T and DVB-T2 signals in the VHF and UHF bands. While primarily
intended to be used with VHF/UHF DVB-T and DVB-T2 receivers and signal distribution systems, filters can
also be useful for mitigation of interference to VHF FM or DAB radio.
