Overview

SIST EN ISO 8750:2009 is an internationally recognized standard specifying the characteristics of coiled, standard duty spring-type straight pins. These pins are manufactured from steel or austenitic or martensitic stainless steel and cover nominal diameters ranging from 0.8 mm to 20 mm inclusive. As a key part of the fasteners category, this standard ensures consistent quality, dimensions, and mechanical properties across manufacturing and sourcing worldwide.

Prepared under the collaboration of ISO Technical Committee ISO/TC 2 (Fasteners) and CEN/TC 185, SIST EN ISO 8750:2009 replaces the earlier 1997 edition, introducing technical revisions to align with current industrial demands. The standard is applicable across Europe, incorporated into national standards by CEN member countries, promoting harmonization of fastener specifications.

Key Topics

  • Material Specifications: Pins are made from steel, austenitic stainless steel, or martensitic stainless steel with defined chemical compositions to ensure mechanical performance and corrosion resistance.
  • Dimensions and Tolerances: Detailed dimensional criteria include nominal diameters from 0.8 mm to 20 mm and lengths from 4 mm up to 200 mm and beyond in 20 mm increments, with precise tolerances for diameter and length. Chamfered ends and coiled construction are standard features.
  • Mechanical Properties: Pins are hardened and tempered to specific hardness ranges (Vickers hardness 420 HV to 560 HV depending on material), ensuring reliable shear strength. Shear tests conform to ISO 8749, and acceptance inspections follow ISO 3269.
  • Surface Finish: The default finish is plain with a protective lubricant, while plating or coating is avoided unless specified, to minimize hydrogen embrittlement risks. If electroplating is applied, baking post-plating is required per ISO 4042 guidelines.
  • Application Guidelines: Installation requires a mating hole diameter matching the nominal pin diameter with tolerance classes H12 or H10 depending on diameter size, guaranteeing optimal fit and function.

Applications

Spring-type straight pins covered by SIST EN ISO 8750:2009 serve critical roles in mechanical assemblies requiring reliable fastening and positioning under standard duty stress conditions. Typical applications include:

  • Engineering and Manufacturing: Used in machinery assemblies to secure components with secure retention yet easy disassembly.
  • Automotive Industry: Employed in engine, transmission, and suspension components for durability and precise alignment.
  • Electrical Equipment: Provide secure connections in switchgear and other electrical assemblies where consistent fastener performance is required.
  • General Industrial Use: Versatile fasteners in production lines, tooling, jigs, and fixtures.

This standard ensures users can specify pins with confidence in material properties, dimensions, and mechanical strength to enhance product reliability and safety.

Related Standards

SIST EN ISO 8750:2009 interacts with and complements several other relevant standards in the realm of spring pins and fasteners:

  • ISO 8748: Specifies coiled spring-type straight pins for heavy duty applications.
  • ISO 8751: Covers coiled spring-type straight pins for light duty applications.
  • ISO 286-2: System of limits and fits - important for hole tolerances when assembling pins.
  • ISO 8749: Details the shear test method for pins, fundamental for quality verification.
  • ISO 3269: Outlines acceptance inspection procedures for fasteners.
  • ISO 4042: Provides guidelines on electroplated coatings minimizing hydrogen embrittlement risk.
  • ISO 6507-1: Describes the Vickers hardness test method for metallic materials used in quality control.

By conforming to SIST EN ISO 8750:2009 and its complementary standards, manufacturers and end-users gain assurance in the uniformity, safety, and performance of spring-type straight pins tailored for standard duty fastening needs.

ISO 8750:2007(E)
Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies
(ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO
technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been
established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and
non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the
International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2.
The main task of technical committees is to prepare International Standards. Draft International Standards
adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an
International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of patent
rights. ISO shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
ISO 8750 was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 2, Fasteners, Subcommittee SC 10, Product
standards for fasteners.
This third edition cancels and replaces the second edition (ISO 8750:1997), which has been technically
revised.
