Fasteners - Grooved pins - Half-length centre grooved (ISO 8743:2026)

This document specifies the characteristics of grooved pins with half-length centre oval grooves (with closed ends), in steel and stainless steel, and with nominal diameter 1 mm to 25 mm.
These grooved pins are designed to fulfil the main following functions:
relative rotation of the assembled parts, and
positioning or guiding,
with an easy installation (due to its symmetrical shape) and a high level of pull-out resistance (due to the elastic fit behaviour of the pin).
The general requirements (including functional principles for grooved pins and assembly) are specified in ISO 13669.

- relativna rotacija sestavnih delov, in
- pozicioniranje ali vodenje,
z enostavno vgradnjo (zaradi simetrične oblike) in visoko stopnjo odpornosti proti izvleku (zaradi elastičnega prileganja zatiča).
Splošne zahteve (vključno s funkcionalnimi načeli za zatiče z utori in sestavljanje) so določene v ISO 13669.

Overview

SIST EN ISO 8743:2026 specifies the characteristics and requirements for grooved pins with half-length centre oval grooves (with closed ends), made from steel and stainless steel, and with nominal diameters from 1 mm to 25 mm. These specialized fasteners are widely used in mechanical assemblies where quick installation, relative movement, and precise positioning of parts are required. The standard details the general principles for the design and assembly of grooved pins, dimensional requirements, material specifications, surface finishes, labelling, and designations.

Key Topics

  • Scope and Application: Covers grooved pins with half-length centre oval grooves in both steel and stainless steel for diameters ranging from 1 mm to 25 mm.
  • Functional Design: Focuses on their ability to allow relative rotation between assembled parts, positioning, and guiding through a symmetrical shape that ensures easy installation and a high degree of pull-out resistance due to the pin's elastic fit.
  • Material Requirements: Specifies acceptable materials, including various grades of steel and stainless steels (e.g., A2, A4, C1, F1), while allowing for other materials by agreement between purchaser and manufacturer.
  • Dimensional Standards: Provides detailed measurement tolerances for diameter, groove location, and overall length, harmonizing with general requirements outlined in ISO 13669.
  • Surface Treatments: Outlines permitted coatings and finishes (e.g., electroplated, non-electrolytic zinc flake coatings, phosphates) and criteria for delivery conditions.
  • Marking and Package Labelling: Mandates comprehensive labelling information, including size, material, surface condition, manufacturer, lot number, and ISO reference, to ensure traceability and compliance.

Applications

Grooved pins specified in ISO 8743:2026 are critical components across a range of industries and engineering applications, such as:

  • Mechanical Assemblies: Used to position, guide, or join components while maintaining the possibility for controlled movement or rotation.
  • Automotive Manufacturing: Essential for securing parts that require alignment yet must be easily assembled or disassembled during maintenance.
  • Machinery and Equipment: Facilitate the installation and retention of moving parts where pull-out resistance and ease of alignment are required.
  • Electronics Enclosures: Used for aligning and fastening components in electronic housings, ensuring structural stability and straightforward assembly.
  • Fixtures and Tooling: Common in jigs and fixtures where precise, repeatable positioning is vital for high-quality series production.

Thanks to their symmetrical design, grooved pins offer straightforward installation, reducing assembly time and risk of error. Their elastic fit characteristic ensures a high level of pull-out resistance, making them reliable in dynamic or high-vibration environments.

Related Standards

For comprehensive implementation and compatibility, consider these related international fastener standards:

  • ISO 13669: General requirements for grooved pins, including principles, assembly, and functional testing.
  • ISO 8740 - ISO 8747: A series of standards covering other types of grooved and taper pins, including parallel and progressive groove designs.
  • ISO 3269: Inspection and acceptance protocols for fasteners.
  • ISO 3506-6: Mechanical properties and the selection of corrosion-resistant stainless steels for fasteners.
  • ISO 4042 and ISO 10683: Specifications for electroplated and zinc flake coating systems for fasteners.
  • ISO 16048: Passivation of stainless steel fasteners.

By adhering to SIST EN ISO 8743:2026 and the referenced standards, manufacturers and users ensure the reliability, safety, and quality of pinned assemblies across a variety of fields, supporting both interoperability and international trade requirements.

with the Agreement on technical cooperation between ISO and CEN (Vienna Agreement).
This third edition cancels and replaces the second edition (ISO 8743:1997) which has been technically
revised.
The main changes are as follows:
— terms and definitions, principles for grooved pins and assembly (including hole dimensions), control of
the expanded diameter d and pin straightness, mechanical and physical properties (including shear
resistance and hardness) and inspection which are common for all grooved pins (product standards
ISO 8739 to ISO 8747, ISO 13670 and ISO 13672) have been specified in the new reference standard
ISO 13669, general requirements;
— non-preferred diameters 1 mm, 3,5 mm, 7 mm, 9 mm, 14 mm and 18 mm have been added;
— values of expanded diameter d for steel pins have been slightly increased for the shortest length range,
and have been added for stainless steel pins;
— tolerances for the rounded end and values for the chamfered end have been added;
— tolerances for the length of the grooves and their location have been added;
— stainless steel grades A2, A4, C1 and F1 have been added;
— other materials (such as ha
