Overview
SIST EN ISO 8743:2001 is an international standard specifying the requirements for grooved pins with half-length centre grooves. These pins are primarily manufactured from steel or austenitic stainless steel and feature three equally spaced longitudinal grooves on half their length. The grooves create an expanded diameter that allows the pin to provide a non-positive locking fit when inserted into a hole of nominal diameter.
This standard is critical in the field of mechanical fasteners and precision engineering, ensuring compatibility, reliability, and mechanical performance of grooved pins in various assemblies.
Key Topics
Dimensions and Tolerances
The standard covers nominal diameters ranging from 1.5 mm to 25 mm with specific tolerances (h9, h11). Detailed dimensional tables provide exact measurements for length, expanded diameter, and groove geometry. The grooves are centrally located over half the pin length.Material Specifications
Material types include carbon steel and austenitic stainless steel. Steel pins generally have a hardness range of 125 HV30 to 245 HV30, while stainless steel pins, conforming to ISO 3506-1, have higher hardness between 210 HV30 and 280 HV30.Surface Finish and Coatings
Pins are typically supplied plain or with a protective lubricant. Optional coatings include black oxide, phosphate coatings, zinc plating with chromate conversion, or other treatments as agreed between customer and supplier. All tolerances apply before coating.Mechanical Properties
Shear strength values are provided for each nominal diameter, ensuring pins meet minimum load bearing requirements. Tests follow ISO 8749 procedures.Installation Guidelines
The hole diameter for pin insertion must match the nominal pin diameter within tolerance class H11 to achieve proper locking fit.Designation Format
Standardized labelling clearly identifies the pin type, dimensions, and material grade, e.g., "Grooved pin ISO 8743 – 6 × 50 – St" for steel or "Grooved pin ISO 8743 – 6 × 50 – A1" for stainless steel.
Applications
Grooved pins conforming to SIST EN ISO 8743:2001 are widely used in:
Mechanical Assemblies
Providing precise alignment and secure fastening in machinery, automotive, aerospace, and electronics industries.Shear Load Situations
Due to defined shear strength properties, these pins are suitable for applications where components experience lateral forces.Precision Engineering
Components requiring exact positioning and repeatability benefit from the standardized dimensions and tolerances.Corrosion-Resistant Applications
Austenitic stainless steel versions support usage in harsh or corrosive environments, extending service life.Replacement and Interchangeability
The adherence to international standard dimensions enables easy replacement and compatibility across global supply chains.
Related Standards
- ISO 3506-1: Specifies corrosion-resistant stainless steel fasteners, including hardness criteria relevant to grooved pins.
- ISO 8749: Defines shear test methods used to verify mechanical strength of grooved pins.
- ISO 3269: Governs acceptance inspection procedures for fasteners.
- ISO 9717 & ISO 4042: Cover phosphate conversion coatings and electroplated coatings applied to pins for corrosion protection.
By complying with SIST EN ISO 8743:2001, manufacturers and users ensure quality, durability, and consistent performance of half-length centre grooved pins across diverse industrial sectors.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide
federation of national standards bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of
preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO
technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which
a technical committee has been established has the right to be represented
on that committee. International organizations, governmental and non-
governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO
collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission
(IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
Draft International Standards adopted by the technical committees are
circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an International
Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting
a vote.
International Standard ISO 8743 was prepared by Technical Committee
ISO/TC 2, Fasteners.
This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition (ISO 8743:1986),
which has been technically revised.

INTERNATIONAL STANDARD ISO ISO 8743:1997(E)
Grooved pins — Half-length centre grooved
1 Scope
This International Standard specifies the characteristics of half-length centre grooved pins made of steel or
austenitic stainless steel which have three equally spaced grooves impressed longitudinally on their exterior
surface, with nominal diameter, d , from 1,5 mm to 25 mm inclusive.
The displaced material to each side of the grooves forming an expanded diameter, d , which is larger than the
nominal diameter d will cause a non-positive locking fit when these grooved pins are forced into a drilled hole
equal to the nominal diameter d (see clause 4).
