Safety of household and similar electrical appliances -- Part 2-17: Particular requirements for blankets, pads and similar flexible heating appliances

Deals with the safety of electric blankets, pads and other flexible heaters which heat the bed or human body. It also deals with control units supplied with the appliance. It covers appiances with a rated voltage less than 250 V. For heaters for medical use, see EN 60601-2-35. For heaters for animals, see EN 60335-2-71. For water bed heaters, see EN 60335-2-66. For foot warmers and heating mats, see EN 60335-2-81.

Traite de la sécurité des couvertures, coussins et autres appareils souples éléctriques destinés à chauffer un lit ou le corps humain. La norme s'applique également aux unités de commande fournies avec les appareils. Elle traite des appareils dont la tension assignée est inférieure à 250V. Pour des appareils de chauffage à usage médicale, voir EN 60601-2-35. Pour des appareils de chauffage pour animaux, voir EN 60335-2-71. NOTE 1 Battery-operated appliances and other d.c. supplied appliances are within the scope of this standard.
NOTE Z1 Examples of appliance for household environment are appliances for typical housekeeping functions used in the household environment that may also be used by non expert users for typical housekeeping functions:
• in shops, offices and other similar working environments;
• in farm houses;
• by clients in hotels, motels and other residential type environments;
• in bed and breakfast type environments.
NOTE Z2 Household environment includes the dwelling and its associated buildings, the garden, etc. Appliances and machines intended to be used by expert or trained users in shops, in light industry and on farms, and appliances and machines which are declared to be for commercial use by lay persons are within

This International Standard deals with the safety of electric blankets, pads, clothing and other flexible appliances that heat the bed or human body, for household and similar purposes, their rated voltage being not more than 250 V. This standard also applies to control units supplied with the appliance. Appliances not intended for normal household use but which nevertheless may be a source of danger to the public, such as appliances intended to be used in beauty parlours or by persons in cold ambient temperatures, are within the scope of this standard. Requirements and tests for clothing are given in Annex CC. As far as is practicable, this standard deals with the common hazards presented by appliances that are encountered by all persons in and around the home. However, in general, it does not take into account
– persons (including children) whose
• physical, sensory or mental capabilities; or
• lack of experience and knowledge prevents them from using the appliance safely without supervision or instruction;
– children playing with the appliance.
