Irrigation techniques - Localised irrigation - Hydraulic evaluation
The purpose of this Standard is to describe a localised irrigation hydraulic system and to specify a method to determine the uniformity in water distribution for each installation to be evaluated in the field.
This document applies to localised irrigation systems. It does not cover management practices.
This paper defines the methodology to be applied in the farm localised irrigation system evaluation.

General Information
Overview
EN 15097:2006 - published by CEN - defines a field method for the hydraulic evaluation of localised irrigation systems (drip and micro-irrigation). The standard describes how to characterise a localised irrigation hydraulic system, collect basic farm and system data, perform on‑farm tests under normal working conditions, and calculate distribution uniformity measures for each installation. It applies to localised irrigation systems only and does not cover management practices.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope and preparatory data: collect farm plan, topography, system layout, manufacturer/installer, age, water source, pump station, filters, emitters, pipe diameters and materials.
- Field sampling procedure: select a representative test sub-unit (SR) and sample four laterals at positions near inlet, 1/3, 2/3 and outer end. On each lateral measure four emitters (total 16 samples).
- Measurements to take:
- Emitter flow volumes (use graduated cylinders to obtain 100–250 ml per emitter)
- Pressures at inlet and outlet emitters of each lateral
- Minimum pressures in pipes connected to tested laterals
- Head losses and evidence of emitter clogging
- Performance metrics:
- Emission uniformity (CUST) computed from the low‑quarter average emitter discharge relative to the block average (expressed as percent).
- Discharge correction factor (f) calculated from measured minimum pressures and the emitter discharge exponent (x).
- Sector emission uniformity (CU) approximated as CU = f × CUST.
- Emitter exponent (x) determined from two pressure–flow measurements within the working pressure range.
- Equipment list: pressure gauge(s), “T” adapters, punch/extractor, collectors, chronometer, funnels, graduated cylinders (150–500 ml), measuring tape.
Applications
- On‑farm performance evaluation of drip and micro‑irrigation systems
- System acceptance testing after installation or rehabilitation
- Troubleshooting uneven distribution, diagnosing clogging, pressure losses
- Input for maintenance planning, retrofit decisions, irrigation design verification
- Regulatory or certification checks where hydraulic uniformity is required
Who uses this standard
- Irrigation designers and installers
- Farm managers and agronomists
- Irrigation consultants and service technicians
- Equipment manufacturers and test laboratories
- Water managers and certification bodies assessing irrigation performance
