Plastics - Epoxy resins - Part 1: Designation (ISO 3673-1:1996)

Contains a method of designation for epoxy resins. The objective of this method is to allocate to each commercial product a group of digits, giving in a coded form certain information on the product such as chemical base, main properties and the nature of modifiers, solvents or additives. Replaces the first edition.

Kunststoffe - Epoxidharze - Teil 1: Einstufung (ISO 3673-1:1996)

Overview

EN ISO 3673-1:1999 (ISO 3673-1:1996) defines a standardized method of designation for epoxy resins. Its purpose is to assign each commercial epoxy resin a concise coded name that conveys essential information - chemical base, main property ranges and the nature of modifiers, solvents or additives. The designation helps users compare products and choose appropriate materials when manufacturers include the code on technical data sheets.

Key topics and requirements

  • Designation format: Resins are identified by the symbol EP followed by a group of five digits (principal properties), a space and three digits (secondary properties).
    • The first two digits (taken together) indicate the chemical base (e.g., bisphenol A glycidyl ethers, aliphatic glycidyl ethers, novolac, halogenated epoxides, etc.).
    • Subsequent single digits encode viscosity, epoxy equivalent, density, and additives/modifiers classes according to defined ranges.
    • A lowercase x may be used if a property is not specified.
  • Property references and test methods: The standard refers to established ISO test methods for property classification, notably:
    • ISO 3219 (viscosity, rotational viscometer),
    • ISO 3001 (epoxy equivalent),
    • ISO 1675 / ISO 1183 (density/density determination).
  • Classification principle: Each digit denotes a class (1, 2, 3, …) corresponding to a range of values for that property. The designation represents mean manufacturing values normally reported on data sheets; tolerances and exact measurement procedures must be supplied by the manufacturer.
  • Example: EP 03361 3xx (from the standard) decodes to an aliphatic glycidyl ether base, viscosity 1–5 Pa·s, epoxy equivalent 291–525 g·mol⁻¹, density 1.15–1.19 g·cm⁻³, no modifiers specified, with unspecified secondary digits.

Applications and users

  • Who uses it: resin manufacturers, formulators, material specifiers, procurement teams, testing laboratories and standards committees benefit from a uniform, searchable designation for product comparison and specification.
  • Practical value:
    • Speeds selection of epoxy resins for adhesives, coatings, laminates, composites and electrical applications by grouping similar materials.
    • Improves clarity in datasheets and procurement documents.
    • Facilitates regulatory reporting and cross-referencing between suppliers.

Related standards

  • ISO 3673 series: Part 1 (designation) and Part 2 (preparation of test specimens and determination of properties).
  • Normative references in the standard: ISO 3219, ISO 3001, ISO 1675, ISO 1183.

Foreword
IS0 (the international Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies (IS0
member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through IS0 technical
committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been established has
the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in
liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. IS0 collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical
Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
Draft International Standards adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting.
Publication as an International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.
International Standard IS0 3673-l was prepared by Technical Committee lSO/TC 61, Plas~;cs, Subcommittee 12,
Thermosetting materials.
This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition (IS0 3673~1:1980), of which it constitutes a minor
(editiorial) revision.
IS0 3673 consists of the following parts, under the general title Plastics - Epoxy resins:

Plastics - Epoxy resins - Part 1: Designation
1 Scope
This part of IS0 3673 specifies a method of designation for epoxy resins.
The objective of this designation method is to allocate to each commercial product a group of digits, called the
“designation”, giving in a coded form certain information on the product: chemical base, approximate values of main
properties and the nature of modifiers, solvents or additives.
Thus, all products having similar characteristics and therefore likely to have the same uses will have the same
designation, so aiding users in their choice, provided that manufacturers quote the designation in their data sheets.
2 Normative references
The following standards contain provisions which, through reference in this text, constitute provisions of this part of
IS0 3673. At the time of publication, the editions indicated were valid. All standards are subject to revision, and
parties to agreements based on this part of IS0 3673 are encouraged to investigate the possibility of applying the
most recent editions of the standards indicated below. Members of IEC and IS0 maintain registers of currently valid
