Overview
The SIST EN ISO 10062:2023/A1:2024 standard is an important amendment to the 2022 edition of ISO 10062, which governs corrosion testing in artificial atmospheres that contain very low concentrations of polluting gases. Published and approved by CEN in June 2024, this amendment primarily introduces a critical footnote of warning related to the use of registered trademarks within the document, specifically concerning the CAS Registry Number.
This standard is essential for industries involved in corrosion testing of metals and alloys, particularly where precise control and measurement at minimal pollutant concentrations are needed. SIST EN ISO 10062:2023/A1:2024 ensures uniformity across European and international markets by harmonizing safety, testing, and terminology practices related to corrosion tests.
Key Topics
Corrosion Testing at Low Pollutant Concentrations
Focuses on methods to simulate artificial atmospheres with very low levels of contaminant gases, reflecting real-world environmental exposure for metals and alloy corrosion studies.Amendment Details - Footnote of Warning
This amendment updates the footnote for the registered trademark CAS Registry Number, clarifying its status as a trademark of the American Chemical Society (ACS). The footnote emphasizes that this reference serves informational purposes, does not constitute ISO endorsement, and that equivalent products may be used if performance equivalency can be demonstrated.Standardization and Compliance
The amendment mandates compliance across EU member countries and aligns with CEN/CENELEC regulations, requiring harmonized national adoption and withdrawal of conflicting standards by December 2024.International and European Collaboration
Developed under ISO/TC 156 and CEN/TC 262 technical committees specializing in corrosion and coatings, this standard reflects broad industry consensus and technical expertise.
Applications
Material Testing Laboratories
Ensures reliable and standardized corrosion testing environments to simulate urban, industrial, and other atmospheres with trace pollutants.Quality Control for Metal Products
Supports industries in confirming the durability and performance of metallic materials and coatings against corrosion in contaminated atmospheres.Research and Development
Facilitates R&D initiatives seeking to innovate corrosion-resistant alloys and coatings by providing reproducible test methods.Environmental and Regulatory Bodies
Provides a reference framework for monitoring corrosion impact due to atmospheric pollution and informing environmental protection strategies.Manufacturers of Protective Coatings
Allows manufacturers to validate and certify coatings designed for corrosion protection under controlled, low-pollution test conditions.
Related Standards
ISO 9227:2022 – Corrosion tests in artificial atmospheres at higher concentration levels, often referenced alongside ISO 10062 for comprehensive corrosion testing regimes.
EN ISO 10289 – Methods for corrosion testing of metals and alloys, complementing artificial atmosphere testing with electrochemical techniques.
CEN/TC 262 Standards – Covering other metallic and inorganic coatings, including corrosion protection methodologies that align with ISO 10062 requirements.
ISO/IEC Directives, Part 1 and 2 – Define the framework and editorial rules guiding the preparation and maintenance of ISO standards such as ISO 10062.
By adhering to SIST EN ISO 10062:2023/A1:2024, stakeholders enhance testing accuracy and reliability, ensuring product durability in environments impacted by minimal atmospheric pollutants. This amendment’s addition of the footnote of warning supports clear legal and intellectual property use, reinforcing the standard’s professional integrity and global applicability.
