Overview
The SIST EN ISO 9227:2023/A1:2024 amendment, titled Corrosion tests in artificial atmospheres - Salt spray tests - Amendment 1: Footnote of warning, is issued by the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) and supplements the existing ISO 9227:2022 standard. This amendment specifically updates the footnote related to the registered trademark "CAS Registry Number" within the standard. Published in June 2024, this amendment guides users in applying salt spray corrosion testing in a compliant and aware manner, ensuring clarity on trademark usage and product equivalency.
Key Topics
- Salt Spray Corrosion Testing: The amendment supports standardized testing in artificial atmospheres using salt spray, a key method for evaluating corrosion resistance of metals and coatings.
- Trademark Clarification: It introduces a precise footnote regarding the "CAS Registry Number" trademark owned by the American Chemical Society (ACS).
- Product Equivalency: Emphasizes that while the CAS Registry Number is trademarked, equivalent products may be used if they provide the same test results, ensuring flexibility without compromising standards.
- Standard Harmonization: Maintains alignment with the ISO 9227:2022 framework, supporting consistent implementation across European member countries.
- Regulatory Compliance: This amendment mandates incorporation into national standards by December 2024, requiring withdrawal of conflicting national standards.
Applications
SIST EN ISO 9227:2023/A1:2024 is fundamental for industries and professionals performing corrosion testing, particularly:
- Metals and Alloys Testing: Used extensively for evaluating corrosion resistance of metallic materials exposed to saline and artificial environments.
- Coating Industries: Essential for testing protective coatings designed to guard against corrosion in harsh conditions.
- Quality Assurance Laboratories: Enables laboratories to adhere to updated regulatory requirements and maintain test result credibility.
- Research and Development: Supports innovation and validation of new materials and surface treatments by providing reliable corrosion test methods.
- Regulatory Bodies and Certification: Provides standardized protocols for certifying corrosion resistance, aiding in product approval and market compliance.
Related Standards
Professionals using SIST EN ISO 9227:2023/A1:2024 should also consider referencing associated standards for comprehensive corrosion testing and metal protection:
- ISO 9227:2022: The primary salt spray test standard modified by this amendment.
- CEN/TC 262 Standards: Cover metallic and other inorganic coatings related to corrosion protection.
- ISO/TC 156 Series: Broader set of corrosion testing protocols developed by the Technical Committee on corrosion of metals and alloys.
- ISO/IEC Directives: Editorial and procedural guidelines for preparation and maintenance of ISO standards.
