Overview

EN 13126-7:2021 is the CEN European standard that specifies requirements and test methods for finger catches used on windows and door-height windows. It defines how finger catches must be tested for durability, strength, security, functionality and corrosion resistance, and sets the classification and marking rules manufacturers and test laboratories should use. EN 13126-7:2021 replaces the 2007 edition and is an independent part of the EN 13126 building hardware series.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope: Applies to finger catches for windows and door-height windows; covers test rig setup, specimen preparation and mounting in a representative sash/sub-frame.
  • Classification (four-box system):
    • Box 1 – Durability: Grades H1, H2, H3 corresponding to 5 000, 10 000 and 20 000 cycles respectively.
    • Box 2 – Mass: Maximum tested sash mass in 10 kg steps (e.g., 050 = 50 kg).
    • Box 3 – Corrosion resistance: Conformance grades referenced to EN 1670.
    • Box 4 – Test sizes: Declared sash SW/SH (example default test size 700 mm SW / 500 mm SH; tolerance ±10 mm).
  • Durability testing: Mechanical cycling per Clause 7.2 to verify continued operation after the declared number of cycles (with normal maintenance).
  • Static load and operating forces: The standard defines pre/during/post durability operating force limits and prescribes static load tests (example values in the test table include 200 N and 300 N held for 60 s).
  • Specimen requirements: Hardware must be installed per manufacturer instructions; specimens should simulate intended frame materials and glazing substitutes.
  • Marking and documentation: Classification results and the EN number must be provided on product documentation or marking.

Practical applications and users

Who uses EN 13126-7:2021:

  • Hardware manufacturers - to design, test and declare compliance for finger catches and produce required product documentation and markings.
  • Test laboratories - to perform standardized durability, static load and corrosion tests.
  • Window system suppliers, specifiers and architects - to select appropriate finger catches for safety, longevity and corrosion performance in specific window sizes and sash masses.
  • Compliance officers and procurement teams - to verify product conformity for building contracts and regulatory assessment.

Adopting EN 13126-7:2021 ensures consistent performance expectations for window finger catches, reduces field failures and simplifies specification across Europe.
