Overview
SIST EN ISO 9173-3:2014 - Dentistry - Extraction Forceps - Part 3: Design (ISO 9173-3:2014) is a European and international standard developed by the Slovenian Institute for Standardization (SIST), specifying the requirements for the design of extraction forceps used in dental practices. Extraction forceps are precision instruments essential for the safe and effective removal of teeth, and this standard unifies expectations for their construction, classification, and ergonomic features. The document is harmonized with other parts of ISO 9173, supporting consistent manufacturing quality and patient safety in dental procedures.
Key Topics
SIST EN ISO 9173-3 focuses on clear definitions and requirements related to the design of dental extraction forceps, including:
- Design Elements: Classification and definition of beak, joint, and handle shapes for extraction forceps.
- Beak types: Coated or non-coated, smooth or serrated, adapted for universal or specific applications.
- Joint types: Circular joint, lap joint, box lock Type 1, and box lock Type 2.
- Handle types: Straight or curved, with ergonomic considerations for grip and stability.
- Dimensional Characteristics: Standardized measurement points, such as beak thickness, beak width, offsets, and overall length, facilitating uniform quality and performance.
- Classification: Systematic approach to forceps identification based on their configuration and intended use (including adult and pediatric variants).
- Intended Application: Guidance for manufacturers to specify the clinical use of each forceps design, supporting correct selection and application in dental practice.
Applications
Adherence to ISO 9173-3:2014 supports a broad array of practical benefits in the dental field:
- Manufacturing Consistency: By providing standardized dimensions and design features, the standard allows manufacturers to produce dental extraction forceps that are interoperable and recognized globally.
- User Safety & Efficacy: Dentists and dental professionals benefit from forceps designed for optimal grip, control, and access, reducing risks to both operator and patient during tooth extraction.
- Device Selection: Dental clinics and procurement professionals can evaluate and select forceps based on a unified set of specifications suited for various dental procedures and patient groups.
- Educational & Regulatory Support: Training programs for dentists, as well as regulatory compliance efforts, leverage the standard’s clear terminology and requirements to ensure best practices in dental care.
Related Standards
SIST EN ISO 9173-3:2014 is part of a coordinated set of international standards governing dental extraction forceps:
- ISO 9173-1: General requirements and test methods for extraction forceps.
- ISO 9173-2: Guidelines for the designation and identification of forceps designs.
- ISO 1942: Vocabulary in dentistry for consistent terminology.
- ISO 15087: Standards for dental elevators, which are often used in conjunction with extraction forceps.
Using these related standards together ensures comprehensive coverage of the quality, terminology, and use of dental extraction instruments within clinical and regulatory frameworks.
