SIST EN 60384-18-2:2008 is the Slovene adoption of EN 60384-18-2:2007, which mirrors IEC 60384-18-2:2007. It is a blank detail specification for fixed aluminium electrolytic surface mount capacitors with non-solid electrolyte at assessment level EZ. The document gives the required format and minimum content for a detail specification, so it is mainly used when drafting a product specification and planning its inspection basis.

What does SIST EN 60384-18-2:2008 specify?

SIST EN 60384-18-2:2008 specifies how a detail specification for this capacitor family shall be written and organized. It is a supplementary document to the sectional specification, and detail specifications that do not follow its style, layout, and minimum content are not to be treated as IEC-compliant.

The document is organized into two main clauses and one normative annex:

PartWhat it covers
Clause 1General data for the detail specification, including identification, dimensions, ratings, marking, ordering information, and added requirements
Clause 2Inspection requirements, including qualification approval and quality conformance inspection
Annex ZANormative references to the international publications and their corresponding European publications

The scope is limited to fixed aluminium electrolytic surface mount capacitors with non-solid electrolyte at assessment level EZ. In practice, this means the standard is a template and control framework for a more specific component specification, not a complete product data sheet by itself.

What are the key requirements of SIST EN 60384-18-2:2008?

SIST EN 60384-18-2:2008 requires the detail specification to identify the document, the capacitor, and the application clearly. Clause 1 lists the items that must be inserted on the first page, including the issuing organization, document number, capacitor description, outline drawing, and assessment level. This matters because the detail specification must be unambiguous enough for purchasing, testing, and approval.

Clause 1.2 and 1.3 set out the technical data that the detail specification shall state. These include dimensions, rated capacitance range, capacitance tolerance, rated voltage, category voltage if used, climatic category, rated temperature, ripple current, loss angle or equivalent series resistance (ESR), impedance if applicable, reverse voltage if required, and insulation resistance if applicable. In practice, this is the core data buyers and test labs use to compare parts and confirm suitability.

Clause 1.5 and 1.6 cover marking and ordering information. The marking of the capacitor and package shall follow IEC 60384-18, and orders shall include at least rated capacitance, tolerance, rated d.c. voltage, the detail specification reference and style reference, and packaging instructions. This helps procurement teams avoid ordering errors and ensures the part can be traced back to the correct specification.

Clause 1.7 to 1.9 require the detail specification to state whether certified records of released lots are required and whether any additional or more severe requirements apply. Table 4 is reserved for characteristics that are added to, or stricter than, those in the sectional specification. This matters when a project needs tighter control than the generic part family provides.

Clause 2 defines the inspection framework. Qualification approval follows the sectional specification, while quality conformance inspection uses Table 5, which sets sampling, periodicity, severities, and acceptance criteria. The table covers visual examination, dimensions, leakage current, capacitance, tangent of loss angle, impedance, solderability, solvent resistance, resistance to soldering heat, substrate bending, mounting, shear test, rapid change of temperature, damp heat tests, endurance, high- and low-temperature storage, surge, and reverse voltage where applicable.

The document also allows some flexibility in practice. For example, ESR may be specified instead of tangent of loss angle, and some dimensional checks may be replaced by in-production control if statistical process control (SPC) is installed.

What terms does SIST EN 60384-18-2:2008 define?

  • Blank detail specification - A supplementary specification that provides the required format and minimum contents for a capacitor detail specification.
  • Sectional specification - The parent specification that provides the common technical framework for the capacitor family.
  • Assessment level EZ - The quality assessment level named for this capacitor family.
  • Equivalent series resistance (ESR) - A possible alternative to tangent of loss angle for specifying losses.
  • Statistical process control (SPC) - A manufacturing control method that can support in-production dimensional verification.
  • IECQ - The IEC Quality Assessment System for Electronic Components, used for the QC number shown on the document.

Who uses SIST EN 60384-18-2:2008?

SIST EN 60384-18-2:2008 is used by capacitor manufacturers, specification writers, quality teams, test laboratories, and buyers of electronic components. Manufacturers use it to draft a compliant detail specification for fixed aluminium electrolytic surface mount capacitors with non-solid electrolyte. Quality and laboratory teams use it to define inspection and qualification checks, while buyers use it to confirm that the ordered part matches the declared ratings, marking, and packaging.

What changed in SIST EN 60384-18-2:2008 from the previous edition?

SIST EN 60384-18-2:2008 replaces the first edition published in 1993. The document states that this second edition is a minor revision related to tables, figures, and references.

Which standards are used with SIST EN 60384-18-2:2008?

  • IEC 60384-1 - The generic specification for fixed capacitors for use in electronic equipment.
  • IEC 60384-18 - The sectional specification for fixed aluminium electrolytic surface mount capacitors with solid (MnO2) and non-solid electrolyte.
  • IEC 60410 - The sampling plan standard used for inspection by attributes, including the sample-size logic in the inspection tables.

What does the SIST EN 60384-18-2:2008 document contain?

The document contains a fill-in framework for a capacitor detail specification, including identification fields, an outline-drawing reference, ratings and characteristics, marking, ordering information, and optional added requirements. It also contains inspection tables that link each test to its conditions, sample size, and acceptance criterion.

Tables 1 to 4 support the technical description and declared characteristics, while Table 5 sets out the qualification conformance inspection schedule. In practice, the document is used to write, check, and approve a product-specific specification and to define the tests used for quality conformance.

Blank detail specification
A blank detail specification is a supplementary document to the sectional specification and
contains requirements for style, layout and minimum content of detail specifications. Detail
specifications not complying with these requirements may not be considered as being in
accordance with IEC specifications nor shall they so be described.
In the preparation of detail specifications the content of 1.4 of the sectional specification shall
be taken into account.
The numbers between square brackets on the first page correspond to the following
information, which shall be inserted in the position indicated.
Identification of the detail specification
(1) The “International Electrotechnical Commission” or the National Standards
Organization under whose authority the detail specification is drafted.
(2) The IEC or National Standards number of the detail specification, date of issue and any
further information required by the national system.
(3) The number and issue number of the IEC or national generic specification.
(4) The IEC number of the blank detail specification.
Identification of the capacitor
(5) A short description of the type of capacitor.
(6) Information on typical construction (when applicable).
NOTE When the capacitor is not designed for use in printed board applications, this is clearly stated in
the detail specification in this position.
(7) Outline drawing with main dimensions which are of importance for interchangeability
and/or reference to the national or international documents for outlines. Alternatively,
this drawing may be given in an annex to the detail specification.
(8) Application or group of applications covered and/or assessment level.
NOTE The assessment level(s) to be used in a detail specification are selected from 3.5.4 of the sectional
specification. This implies that one blank detail specification may be used in combination with several
assessment levels, provided the grouping of the tests does not change.
(9) Reference data on the most important properties, to allow comparison between the
various capacitor types.
