Uranium dioxide powder - Determination of apparent density and tap density (ISO 9161:2019)

This document specifies a method of determining the apparent density and tap density of free-flowing uranium dioxide (UO2) powder which will be used for pelleting and sintering of UO2 pellets as a nuclear fuel.
This method can be used for different UO2 powder types including grains, granules, spheres or other kinds of particles. The method can also be applied to other fuel powders as PuO2, ThO2 and powder mixtures as UO2-PuO2 and UO2-Gd2O3.
This document is based on the principle of using a flowmeter funnel (see 4.1). Other measurement apparatus, such as a Scott volumeter, can also be used.

Le présent document spécifie une méthode permettant de déterminer la masse volumique apparente et la masse volumique après tassement de la poudre de dioxyde d'uranium (UO2) à écoulement libre, poudre destinée à constituer du combustible nucléaire après agglomération en pastilles de UO2 et frittage.
Cette méthode s'applique aux diverses poudres de UO2 constituées de grains, de granules, de billes ou d'autres types de particules. Elle s'applique également à d'autres poudres de combustible telles que PuO2, ThO2 et des mélanges de poudre tels que UO2-PuO2 et UO2-Gd2O3.
Le présent document est basé sur le principe d'utilisation d'un cône d'écoulement (voir 4.1). D'autres appareillages de mesure, tels que le volumètre de Scott, peuvent également être utilisés.

The text of ISO 9161:2019 has been prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 85 "Nuclear energy,

nuclear technologies, and radiological protection” of the International Organization for Standardization

(ISO) and has been taken over as EN ISO 9161:2021 by Technical Committee CEN/TC 430 “Nuclear

energy, nuclear technologies, and radiological protection” the secretariat of which is held by AFNOR.

This European Standard shall be given the status of a national standard, either by publication of an

identical text or by endorsement, at the latest by August 2021, and conflicting national standards shall

be withdrawn at the latest by August 2021.

Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of
