Overview
EN 13053:2006/FprA1 (CEN) is an amendment to the European standard EN 13053 for ventilation for buildings - air handling units (AHU). The amendment focuses on energy-related characteristics and improves the energy classification of AHUs following discussions in Eurovent WG6C. It updates fan-section requirements, defines air velocity and fan power consumption classes, and adds an informative Annex B on heat recovery characteristics, efficiencies and auxiliary energy evaluation.
Key Topics
Air velocity classes (fan section)
The standard defines average air velocity classes inside the AHU casing (V1–V9). Common application ranges are V2 to V7, and lower velocities are recommended to reduce energy consumption.- Example classes: V1 ≤ 1.6 m/s, V2 >1.6–1.8 m/s, … V9 >3.6 m/s.
Fan power consumption and classes
Clause 6.3.2 provides a reference method to calculate a fan’s reference power (Pm) from fan-section static pressure (Δp) and airflow (q). Drives are grouped into power classes P1–P7 defined relative to Pm (e.g., P2 ≤ Pm × 0.90, P4 ≤ Pm × 1.00). Values are based on nominal conditions (air density 1.2 kg/m³).Heat recovery system (HRS) rating
Clause 6.5.2 and the new Annex B define:- Temperature efficiency (ηt) under dry conditions: ηt = (t'' − t') / (t' − t1').
- Pressure loss and how it affects auxiliary electric consumption.
- Coefficient of performance (ε) = QHRS / Pel and combined energy efficiency (ηe) = ηt × (1 − 1/ε).
- Heat recovery classes H1–H6 (e.g., H1 ≥ 71%, H3 ≥ 55%, H5 ≥ 36%) for balanced mass flows (1:1).
Auxiliary energy and yearly views
Annex B explains how to account for pumps and fans in electrical power calculations and how to translate instantaneous efficiencies into yearly/primary-energy performance metrics.
Applications
- AHU manufacturers: specifying product performance, declaring velocity and fan power classes, and documenting heat recovery performance.
- HVAC designers and consulting engineers: selecting units that meet energy targets, optimizing fan velocities and HRS class for building energy models.
- Energy assessors and facility managers: comparing AHU options based on standardized efficiency metrics and estimating annual energy impacts.
- Test labs and certification bodies: applying the defined classes and measurement bases when rating units.

Foreword
This document (EN 13053:2006/FprA1:2010) has been prepared by Technical Committee CEN/TC 156
“Ventilation for buildings”, the secretariat of which is held by BSI.
This document is currently submitted to the Unique Acceptance Procedure.
Introduction
The aim of this amendment is to modify the essential energy-related characteristics of air handling units, and
to give additional information to enable a better and more practical energy classification.
1 Modification to 6.3, Fan section
In 6.3.1, replace Table 4 with the following:
"
Table 4 — Classes of average air velocity levels inside the casing
Class Air velocity
m/s
Class V1 maximum 1,6
Class V2 > 1,6 to 1,8
Class V3 > 1,8 to 2,0
Class V4 > 2,0 to 2,2
Class V5 > 2,2 to 2,5
Class V6 > 2,5 to 2,8
Class V7 > 2,8 to 3,2
Class V8 > 3,2 to 3,6
Class V9 > 3,6
NOTE The air velocity in the unit has a large influence on
energy consumption. The velocities are calculated for air
velocity in AHU cross-section. The velocity is based on the
square area of filter section of a unit, or if no filter is installed,
it is based on the square area of the fan section.
".
Add below Table 4, a NOTE 2 and replace "NOTE" with "NOTE 1".
"NOTE 2 Common velocity classes are V2 to V7 dependant on application. To reduce energy consumption it is strongly
recommended to reduce the velocity.".
Add a new subclause 6.3.2, Power consumption of fans as follows:
"
6.3.2 Power consumption of fans
The power consumption of drives can be defined in classes. The maximum power consumption has to be
calculated by the following equation:

ref stat v
where
Pm is the reference power consumption, [kW];
ref
∆p is the static pressure to be measured at the fan section, [Pa];

q is the air flow of the fan, [m3/h].

Each fan shall be specified in the power
consumption classes. All values are based on
nominal conditions with a density of 1,2 kg/m³.
NOTE 1 The power consumption is the useful power supplied from the mains (including any motor control equipment).
NOTE 2 Common power consumption classes are P2 to P5 dependant on application.".
