Fibre optic interconnecting devices and passive components - Basic test and measurement procedures - Part 2-18: Tests - Dry heat (IEC 61300-2-18:2023)
This part of IEC 61300 details a procedure to determine the suitability of a fibre optic interconnecting device, passive component, splices or closure to withstand the environmental condition of extended high temperature that occur during operation, storage and/or transport. The test is intended to indicate the performance of such devices when exposed to heat of constant temperature over a given period.
In general terms, this test provides a high temperature to induce potential failures due to softening and expansions.
This procedure does not assess the ability of a device to operate during temperature variations; in this case, IEC 61300-2-22 is used.

- les termes et définitions ont été mis à jour conformément à l’IEC 61753-1:2018;
- les sévérités d’essais ont été mises à jour conformément à l'IEC 61753-1:2018;
- une simplification de la combinaison de la température et de la durée de l’exposition a été effectuée.
Optični spojni elementi in pasivne komponente - Osnovni preskusni in merilni postopki - 2-18. del: Preskusi - Suha vročina (IEC 61300-2-18:2023)

Overview
SIST EN IEC 61300-2-18:2023 is the latest international standard published by CLC that specifies basic test and measurement procedures for fibre optic interconnecting devices and passive components. This standard focuses specifically on the dry heat test, designed to evaluate the ability of fibre optic devices, splices, and closures to withstand extended exposure to elevated temperatures typically encountered during operation, storage, or transport. By simulating constant high temperature conditions, this test helps identify potential heat-induced failures such as material softening or expansion.
As a critical component of fibre optic system reliability assurance, SIST EN IEC 61300-2-18:2023 replaces the 2005 edition with updated test severities and simplified procedures aligned with IEC 61753-1:2018 guidance. It plays a vital role in certifying fibre optic components for harsh environments.
Key Topics
Scope and Purpose
The standard defines a procedure to determine the performance stability and suitability of fibre optic components when subjected to constant high temperature environments over a specified duration. It excludes assessments under temperature variations, which are addressed separately by IEC 61300-2-22.Test Methodology
The dry heat test requires placing the device under test (DUT) inside an environmental chamber capable of maintaining constant temperature with close tolerance. The test adheres to IEC 60068-2-2 Test Bb procedures for dry heat environmental simulation.Optical Monitoring
During the test, optical parameters including attenuation and return loss may be continuously or periodically monitored using equipment complying with IEC 61300-3-3. This enables real-time detection of performance degradation attributable to heat stress.Apparatus Requirements
- An environmental test chamber with proper air circulation to maintain uniform temperature without exposing the DUT to direct heating elements.
- Optical measurement equipment that meets IEC standards for accuracy and precision in measuring attenuation and return loss.
Test Sequence
- Preconditioning and initial measurements ensure baseline data is collected before heat exposure.
- The conditioning phase exposes DUTs to dry heat for the designated time and temperature.
- Recovery and final measurement steps assess any residual effects or irreversible damage.
Severity Levels
Test severities, defined by combinations of temperature and exposure time, are updated to reflect modern performance standards. These enable tailored testing aligned with device specifications or application environments.
Applications
SIST EN IEC 61300-2-18:2023 is essential for manufacturers, testing laboratories, and quality assurance teams dealing with fibre optic components in telecommunications, data centers, industrial automation, aerospace, and other sectors where reliability in elevated temperature conditions is critical.
Reliability Validation
Manufacturers use dry heat testing to validate design robustness and guarantee long-term performance under harsh environmental conditions.Component Certification
Compliance with this standard forms part of certification processes required by end-users and regulatory bodies for fibre optic interconnecting devices and passive components.Quality Control
Routine testing during production batches helps detect early failures and maintain consistent product quality.Research & Development
R&D teams leverage this test to optimize materials and construction methods for improved heat resistance.

FOREWORD
1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote international
co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To this end and
in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications, Technical Reports,
Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as “IEC Publication(s)”). Their
preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt with
may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising
with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely with the International Organization for
Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between the two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
interested IEC National Committees.
3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National
Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC
Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the wa
