Overview

EN 2591-403:2025 - Aerospace series: Elements of electrical and optical connection - Test methods - Part 403: Sinusoidal and random vibration - specifies test procedures to determine the ability of electrical and optical connection elements (connectors, contacts, harnesses) to withstand sinusoidal and broadband random vibration severities. It is intended to be used together with EN 2591-100 and is based on EN 60068-2-6 (sinusoidal) and EN 60068-2-64 (random).

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Test methods
    • Method A - Sinusoidal vibration (per EN 60068-2-6): sweep 5 Hz to 3 000 Hz in 20 min; cycle repeated 12 times per axis (approx. 12 h total). Preferred severity levels (Level 1–3) define amplitude/acceleration cross-over points.
    • Method B - Random vibration (per EN 60068-2-64): broadband spectral shapes and power spectral density (PSD) options (lower and higher noise RMS curves). Test axes, monitoring and durations are specified.
    • Method C - High vibration endurance: harness and clipping requirements, connector coupling torque and mechanical mounting details for endurance validation.
  • Specimen preparation
    • Connector qualification: all contact lines wired in series.
    • Contact qualification: each contact monitored individually.
    • Details to be specified in the technical specification: mounting method, mated/unmated condition, sensor fixation, temperature, duration, accessories and initial/final measurements.
  • Measurement & acceptance
    • Vibration monitoring at specimen fixing points to verify PSD/sinusoidal curve compliance.
    • Electrical discontinuity limit: no discontinuity ≥ 1 µs; shorter events allowed if <1 Hz repetition rate.
    • Post-test sequence may include EN 2591-101 (visual), EN 2591-408 (mating/unmating forces), and EN 2591-201/202 (contact resistance).

Applications and who uses it

  • Designed for aerospace manufacturers, connector and contact designers, test laboratories, quality and reliability engineers, and specification authors.
  • Practical uses:
    • Qualifying electrical and optical connectors and harness assemblies for aircraft and space vehicles.
    • Defining vibration requirements in procurement and type-approval documentation.
    • Establishing test procedures for R&D, production validation and failure analysis.
  • Keywords: EN 2591-403:2025, aerospace connectors, vibration testing, sinusoidal vibration, random vibration, PSD, connector qualification.

Related standards

  • EN 2591-100 (general test framework)
  • EN 2591-101, EN 2591-201, EN 2591-202, EN 2591-204, EN 2591-408
  • EN 60068-2-6 and EN 60068-2-64 (vibration test methods)

This standard provides the procedural and monitoring controls needed to ensure connector reliability under specified sinusoidal and random vibration environments typical in aerospace systems.
