Overview
SIST EN ISO 14526-3:2000 sets forth the requirements for selected phenolic powder moulding compounds (PF-PMCs), a key category of thermosetting plastics used in numerous industrial applications. This standard, developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and adopted by CEN, specifies the physical and chemical properties essential for PF-PMCs along with the testing methods and conditions for compression and injection-moulded specimens.
The document focuses on moulding compounds with significantly different compositions and properties, highlighting those of substantial technical or economic relevance. It supplements companion parts ISO 14526-1 and ISO 14526-2, which cover the designation system and test specimen preparation respectively.
Key Topics
Property Requirements
EN ISO 14526-3 defines requirements across multiple property categories:
- Mechanical properties: Stress at break, flexural strength, and Charpy impact strength (both notched and unnotched).
- Thermal properties: Temperature of deflection under load at different time intervals and flammability characteristics.
- Electrical properties: Dissipation factor, volume and surface resistivity, and proof tracking index.
- Other parameters: Water absorption and free ammonia content.
Test results must meet stringent statistical limits to ensure consistency and reliability across batches. However, rheological and processing properties are not strictly limited but must meet mutually agreed standards for satisfactory moulding.
Designation and Classification
The standard classifies PF-PMCs into distinct types based on their composition and performance attributes. The designation system from ISO 14526-1 is used to identify types by their filler and reinforcement materials such as:
- Wood flour (WD) and mineral dust (MD)
- Low filler (LF) and mineral dust (MD)
- Glass fiber (GF), glass granulate (GG), or short fibers (SC)
- Steel strand (SS) or phenolic fibers (PF)
This classification facilitates clear specification and interchangeability within industry sectors.
Testing and Compliance
Testing methodologies align with ISO 14526-2 and are critical for evaluating compliance. Compression-moulding and injection-moulding methods are both addressed, recognizing their impact on material properties. Values from sample sets guide acceptance criteria, with permissible variations clearly stated.
Applications
Phenolic powder moulding compounds standardized by SIST EN ISO 14526-3:2000 are widely used in applications that demand:
- High mechanical strength and impact resistance: electrical insulators, automotive parts, and industrial components exposed to mechanical stress.
- Thermal stability: components in electrical devices, heating elements, and durability-critical moulded parts.
- Electrical insulation: switchgear, circuit breakers, and connectors requiring reliable dielectric properties.
- Flame retardancy: safety-critical applications adhering to stringent fire performance criteria.
Standardization ensures manufacturers and end-users can specify materials with predictable, verifiable performance, supporting quality assurance and regulatory compliance.

Summary
SIST EN ISO 14526-3:2000 is a crucial standard for defining the requirements of selected phenolic powder moulding compounds used in the plastics industry. By detailing precise mechanical, thermal, electrical, and other property metrics, it enables consistent quality, supports extensive industrial applications, and harmonizes international material specifications. Manufacturers, engineers, and quality assurance professionals rely on this standard to ensure the performance, reliability, and safety of phenolic moulded products.

ISO 14526-3:1999(E)
Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies (ISO
member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO technical
committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been established has
the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in
liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical
Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 3.
Draft International Standards adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting.
Publication as an International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this part of ISO 14526 may be the subject of
patent rights. ISO shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
International Standard ISO 14526-3 was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 61, Plastics, Subcommittee
SC 12, Thermosetting materials.
After a transition period of, at the most, four years, the three parts of ISO 14526 (see below) will replace
ISO 800:1992, of which they constitute a technical revision.
ISO 14526 consists of the following parts, under the general title Plastics — Phenolic powder moulding compounds
(PF-PMCs):
Part 1: Designation system and basis for specifications
Part 2: Preparation of test specimens and determination of properties
Part 3: Requirements for selected moulding compounds
