ETSI ES 201 873-9 V4.13.1 (2025-10) - Methods for Testing and Specification (MTS); The Testing and Test Control Notation version 3; Part 9: Using XML schema with TTCN-3
Overview
SIST ES 201 873-9 V4.13.1:2025 is a Slovenian national standard, identical to ETSI ES 201 873-9 V4.13.1 (2025-10). Developed and maintained by the Slovenian Institute for Standardization (SIST), it forms part of the "Methods for Testing and Specification" (MTS) series. This specific document, Part 9, focuses on defining standardized mapping rules between W3C® XML Schema and TTCN-3 (Testing and Test Control Notation Version 3). TTCN-3 is a widely adopted test specification language used within telecommunication and information technology environments.
The main objective of this standard is to enable rigorous testing of XML-based systems, interfaces, and protocols by providing clear guidelines for translating XML Schema components into TTCN-3 constructs. This approach promotes interoperability, test automation, and compliance in software systems that utilize XML data formats.
Key Topics
The document comprehensively covers the following essential areas:
- Mapping Rules: Explains the mechanisms for translating W3C XML Schema definitions to TTCN-3, enabling automated test case generation and validation.
- XML Schema Component Support: Details the handling of elements, attributes, simple and complex types, including edge cases such as mixed content or nillable items.
- Data Types and Facets: Specifies correspondence between XML built-in data types (e.g., string, integer, date/time) and their TTCN-3 counterparts, including constraints like length, pattern, enumeration, and value ranges.
- Namespaces and References: Addresses approach for XML namespaces, document includes/imports, and control of schema scope within TTCN-3 mapping.
- Unsupported Features: Identifies limitations and exceptions where certain XML Schema features may not map directly to TTCN-3 or require special handling.
- Encoding Instructions: Provides guidance on encoding settings for XML-to-TTCN-3, ensuring correct parsing and interpretation during test execution.
- Substitution and Type Derivation: Covers mechanisms for handling element and type substitution, supporting complex XML design patterns within tests.
Applications
This standard is highly relevant in environments where XML-based protocols or data models must be rigorously tested for conformance, integration, or performance. Typical application areas include:
- Telecommunication Systems: Testing of network protocols, signaling interfaces, and management interfaces defined by XML Schema.
- Information Technology: Ensuring integration and interoperability between IT systems exchanging XML messages or utilizing XML configuration.
- Automated Test Systems: Enabling the use of TTCN-3 to automate test suites that validate XML data structures against agreed interfaces and standards.
- Compliance and Certification: Assisting in certification programs by providing standardized test mapping for XML Schema-based solutions.
- Software Development and QA: Supporting developers and quality assurance teams in building reproducible and reliable tests for XML-centric modules.
By using SIST ES 201 873-9 V4.13.1:2025, organizations improve the efficiency and reliability of their test automation processes, ensure consistent validation of XML-based interfaces, and align with international best practices for testing communication systems.
Related Standards
This standard is part of a broader suite supporting TTCN-3 and XML validation. Reference is made to the following key documents for a holistic approach:
- ETSI ES 201 873-1: Core definition of TTCN-3, covering language syntax and test execution semantics.
- ETSI ES 201 873 Series: Includes complementary parts detailing TTCN-3 extensions for other protocol mappings and encodings.
- W3C XML Schema (XSD): The formal reference for defining XML data structures, essential for understanding the mapping process.
- ISO/IEC 9646: Guidelines for conformance testing methodologies.
- SIST/ETSI MTS Standards: Additional Slovenia-adopted ETSI MTS standards for testing and specification.
Implementing these linked standards alongside SIST ES 201 873-9 V4.13.1:2025 provides comprehensive support for structured, repeatable testing of XML-based interfaces across telecommunication and IT domains.
