Safety of woodworking machines - Circular sawing machines - Part 5: Circular sawbenches/up-cutting cross-cut sawing machines
This document deals with all significant hazards, hazardous situations and events as listed in Clause 4 which are relevant to circular saw benches/up-cutting cross-cut sawing machines, hereinafter referred to as "machines", designed to cut solid wood, chipboard, fibreboard, plywood and also these materials where they are covered with plastic edging and/or plastic/light alloy laminates. This European Standard does not apply to: hand-held motor-operated electric tools or any adaptation permitting their use in a different mode, i.e. bench mounting; machines set up on a bench or a table similar to a bench, which is intended to carry out work in a stationary position, capable of being lifted by one person by hand. For Computer Numerically Controlled (CNC) machines this European Standard does not cover hazards related to Electro-Magnetic Compatibility (EMC). This European Standard is primarily directed at machines which are manufactured after the date of issue of this European Standard.

electronic components the last paragraph of 9.3.4 of EN 60204-1:2006 does not apply and the minimum life
time of the friction coating and method of replacement shall be given (see 6.3).".
rd
Add after 3 paragraph:
"As an exception where the machine is designed with an electrical brake which contains electronic
components the control system for braking shall fulfil at least the requirements of PL=b and be designed in
category 2 of EN ISO 13849-1:2008 with the exception that the test rate requirement in 4.5.4 of
EN ISO 13849-1:2008 is not applicable. The safety related part of the control circuits for braking shall be
tested periodically, e.g. by monitoring the braked run down time. The feed back shall come from either the
encoder fitted to the spindle motor or from the measurement of the residual current in the wires powering the
motor.
The test works
1) independently from the basic control system for braking or an internal watch dog function shall be
provided,
2) independently from the intention of the operator,
3) at least during starting/stopping the spindle.
A negative test is indicated. Where the test result is negative more than three times in sequence it is not
possible to operate the machine.
The diagnostic coverage (DC ) shall be ≥ 60 %.
avg
NOTE See Annex E of EN ISO 13849-1:2008 for DC estimation.
As an exception to 5.1.1 a simple electronic brake (not using programmable logic) may be PL=b and designed
in category B in accordance with the requirements of EN ISO 13849-1:2008 if the probability of a failure in
-6 -1
high demand mode (PFH) is less than 3 × 10 h .
For calculating the probability of a failure in high demand mode (PFH) for a simple electronic brake
component with no fault tolerance and no testing capability (category B) the procedure described in Annex D
of EN ISO 13849-1:2008 shall be used.".
In verification replace "test below" with "tests in Annex I".

16 Modifications to 5.2.7.1, Guarding of the saw blade above the table
Replace the text of i) with: "where the contact between the sides of the adjustable guard and saw blade is not
avoided by design the lower inner edges of the sides of the adjustable saw blade guard shall be lined with a
rib, made of plastic, light alloy, wood or wood based material if contact between the sides of the adjustable
guard and saw blade is not avoided by design. This rib shall be a minimum of 3 mm in width and shall be
designed so as to prevent the saw blade teeth from cutting into the adjustable saw blade guard should it be
displaced from the line of cut (see Figure 23). If the rib is replaceable, the fixing arrangement shall be such
that it does not damage the saw blade e.g. by using brass screws;".
Add after i) the following and renumber accordingly:
"j) the extension piece required in g) shall be made of steel, light alloy, polycarbonate or similar materials. At
least the part on the front side shall be transparent, so that it is possible to see the cutting line from the
workers place. When this part is made out of polycarbonate it shall have a thickness of at least 3 mm. Other
plastic material shall fulfil the test in Annex G.
The extension piece shall be designed to encompass the saw blade in any position (angle and height).
Applying the forces of the test described in Annex F shall not lead to a contact between the guard and the
largest saw blade for which the machine is designed.".
17 Modifications to 5.2.7.3, Access to the saw blade below the table
Add after first sentence in first paragraph:
"Fixed guards that are to be demounted by the user e.g. for maintenance and cleaning purposes shall be fitted
with un-losable screws see 6.3 aa).".
nd st
Replace 2 sentence in 1 paragraph with:
"Any access which may be required for maintenance purposes or for changing the saw blade shall be via a
moveable guard interlocked with guard locking with the spindle drive motor at least in accordance with Annex
N of EN 1088:1995+A2:2008.".

18 Modification to 5.2.7.4, Guarding of drives
Replace first paragraph with:
"Access to the drive mechanisms shall be prevented either by a fixed guard or a moveable guard interlocked
with guard locking with the spindle drive motor at least in accordance with Annex N of
EN 1088:1995+A2:2008.
Fixed guards that are to be demounted by the user e.g. for maintenance and cleaning purposes shall be fitted
with un-losable screws see 6.3 aa).".
19 Modification to 5.3.2.2, Noise emission measurement
nd
In b), replace 2 sentence with "The correction formula for this difference is given in 8.3.3, Equation (12) of
EN ISO 3746:2010".
Delete e) and renumber accordingly.
nd
Add, at the end of 2 indent b), "(EN 11202:2010, 6.4.1, accuracy grade 2 (Engineering)".
Add as last paragraph: "For noise declaration 6.3 v) shall be met.".

21 Modifications to 5.3.3, Emission of chips and dust
Add after second paragraph:
"When the opening of the capture device can not face the projection, the flow of chips and dust shall be
guided efficiently to the opening of the capture device.
The opening of the capture device shall be large enough to capture the chips and dust projected.
NOTE 1 The size of the opening of the capture device depends on the emission pattern and the distance between the
emission source and the opening of the capture device.
The capture device shall be designed in order to minimise pressure drop and material build up e.g. by
avoiding abrupt change of direction of extracted chips and dust, sharp angles and obstacles causing a risk for
hanging of chip and dust.
The conveying of chips and dust between the capture device and the machine connection to the CADES (chip
and dust extraction system), especially flexible connections of moving units, shall follow the requirements to
minimise pressure drop and material build up.".
