Overview

EN 1912:2004/prA2 (CEN, draft amendment August 2007) is a technical amendment to the European standard EN 1912:2004 - Structural timber: Strength classes - Assignment of visual grades and species. The amendment updates the official mapping between national visual grading rules, commercial grade names and botanical species to the European strength classes (C‑classes). The document was prepared by CEN/TC 124 and submitted under the Unique Acceptance Procedure. It replaces the original Table 1 to add or reassign visual grades/species (notably moving the Slovak SI spruce grade from C22 to C24) and clarifies source references and notes on applicability.

Key topics and requirements

  • Assignment table update: Replacement of Table 1 that links national grading rules and commercial grade names to Euro strength classes (C35, C30, C27, C24, C22, C20, C18, C16, C14, etc.).
  • Species and grade mapping: Explicit mapping of conifer species and certain poplars to strength classes, including country-specific grade names (e.g., ST, S, T, J&P, SLF, SS).
  • Notable amendment: Movement of the Slovak spruce grade (SI) from C22 to C24, reflecting reassignment of visual grade to a higher strength class.
  • Ancillary information: Botanical identification columns, comments and source references for each assignment; notes on geographic abbreviations (Nordic, CNE, NNE, NC) and restrictions (e.g., poplar assignments apply only to certain clones).
  • Normative linkage: Grades listed are specified in grading standards referenced in Annex A (grading standards are authoritative for the listed grade definitions).

Practical applications

  • Ensures consistent timber grading across European markets by defining how national visual grades correspond to Euro strength classes.
  • Supports consistent material selection for load‑bearing timber elements, procurement specifications, quality control and cross‑border trade of structural timber.
  • Provides a reference for updating national standards, technical datasheets and product declarations when grade-to-strength relationships change.

Who uses this standard

  • Timber graders and inspection bodies implementing visual grading rules.
  • Timber producers, sawmills and suppliers aligning commercial grades with Euro strength classes.
  • Structural engineers, specifiers and architects referencing material strength classes for design and verification.
  • National standards bodies and certification schemes responsible for harmonizing grade assignments.

Related standards and references

  • EN 1912:2004 (base standard) and the grading standards listed in Annex A - these provide the detailed grade definitions that EN 1912 maps to strength classes.
  • Prepared by CEN/TC 124 (Timber structures); document distributed in English, French and German for national adoption.
