Overview

FprCEN ISO/TS 20955 (ISO/TS 20955:2024) defines performance requirements and test methods for insoles used in all kinds of footwear. Its primary purpose is to assess the fitness for purpose of insole components - ensuring suitability for the intended end use - and to provide a common reference for manufacturers and suppliers involved in insole specification, testing and quality control.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope and classification: Insoles are classified by exposure/class (A–D) according to intended use:
    • Class A: slight exposure (infant shoes, slippers, indoor, fashion)
    • Class B: medium (casual shoes)
    • Class C: high (school shoes, adult work shoes not PPE, general sports)
    • Class D: heavy (heavy work, trekking, sports purpose)
  • Essential vs additional requirements: All essential requirements must be met; additional requirements may be agreed between supplier and manufacturer.
  • Referenced test methods: The Technical Specification refers to established ISO test methods for insoles, including methods for:
    • Delamination resistance (ISO 20866)
    • Heel‑pin holding strength (ISO 20867)
    • Abrasion resistance (ISO 20868)
    • Resistance to stitch tear (ISO 20876)
    • Water absorption/desorption (ISO 22649 / ISO 2264 method B)
    • Dimensional stability (ISO 22651)
    • Sample preparation and conditioning (ISO 17709)
  • Representative performance criteria (as given in the specification):
    • Minimum delamination resistance values for fore and seat parts, wet/dry conditions (vary by class)
    • Stitch‑tear resistance thresholds for sewn insoles
    • Abrasion criteria (no significant changes before specified cycle counts)
    • Heel pin holding strength thresholds by heel height (dry/wet)
    • Dimensional stability limits (increase/shrinkage ≤ 2.0 %)
    • Optional water absorption/desorption targets (e.g., absorption ≥ 70 mg/cm, desorption ≥ 60 %)
  • Marking and labelling: Optional. If referenced, only insoles meeting all essential requirements may be marked; marking must include manufacturer identification, intended class and reference to the document.

Applications

  • Quality control and incoming inspection of insole components
  • Product development and material selection for footwear brands and suppliers
  • Contractual specification between insole manufacturers and footwear OEMs
  • Laboratory testing and conformity assessment for component performance
  • Comparative benchmarking of insoles across applications (casual, sport, work, children’s footwear)

Who should use this standard

  • Insole and footwear component manufacturers and suppliers
  • Footwear brands and OEM product teams
  • Test laboratories and certification bodies
  • Procurement, quality assurance and R&D teams focused on footwear component performance
