Size designation of clothes - Part 1: Anthropometric definitions for body measurement (ISO 8559-1:2017)
This document provides a description of anthropometric measurements that can be used as a basis for
the creation of physical and digital anthropometric databases. The list of measurements specified in
this document is intended to serve as a guide for practitioners in the field of clothing who are required
to apply their knowledge to select population market segments and to create size and shape profiles
for the development of all garment types and their equivalent fit mannequins. The list provides a
guide for how to take anthropometric measurements, as well as give information to clothing product
development teams and fit mannequin manufacturers on the principles of measurement and their
underlying anatomical and anthropometrical bases.
Annex A describes the use of the pictogram (standardized and modified) based on the selection of most
usual body dimensions used for clothing size designation.
This document is intended to be used in conjunction with national, regional or international
regulations or agreements to ensure harmony in defining population groups and to allow comparison
of anthropometric data sets.

Dieses Dokument stellt eine Beschreibung anthropometrischer Maße zur Verfügung, die als Grundlage für die Erstellung physischer und digitaler anthropometrischer Datenbanken angewendet werden können. Die in diesem Dokument festgelegte Liste von Maßen ist dafür vorgesehen, als Anleitung für auf dem Gebiet der Bekleidung tätigen Fachleute zu dienen, die ihr Wissen anwenden müssen, um Marktsegmente der Bevölkerung auszuwählen und Größen- und Formprofile für die Entwicklung aller Arten von Bekleidungsstücken und deren entsprechenden Büsten zu erzeugen. Die Liste enthält eine Anleitung zur Durchführung anthropometrischer Messungen sowie Informationen für Bekleidungsentwickler und Büstenhersteller zu den Messprinzipien und ihren zugrunde liegenden anatomischen und anthropometrischen Grundlagen.
In Anhang A ist die Verwendung des Piktogramms (Standard und modifiziert) auf der Grundlage der Auswahl der am häufigsten verwendeten Körpermaße für die Größenbezeichnung der Bekleidung beschrieben.
Dieses Dokument ist dafür vorgesehen, in Verbindung mit nationalen, regionalen oder internationalen Vorschriften oder Vereinbarungen angewendet zu werden, um die Übereinstimmung bei der Definition von Bevölkerungsgruppen sicherzustellen und den Vergleich anthropometrischer Datensätze zu ermöglichen.

L'ISO 8559-1:2017 fournit une description des mesures anthropométriques pouvant servir de base pour la création de bases de données anthropométriques physiques et numériques. La liste des mesures spécifiées dans le présent document est destinée à servir de guide aux professionnels du secteur de l'habillement qui ont pour tâche d'appliquer leurs connaissances afin de sélectionner des segments de marché parmi la population et de créer des profils de tailles et de formes en vue du développement de tous types de vêtements et des mannequins correspondants. La liste fournit un guide sur la manière de prendre des mesures anthropométriques, et donne des informations aux équipes de développement de produits vestimentaires et aux fabricants de mannequins sur les principes de mesurage ainsi que les bases anthropométriques et anatomiques sous-jacentes.
L'Annexe A décrit l'emploi du pictogramme (normalisé et modifié) fondé sur la sélection des mesures corporelles les plus couramment utilisées pour la désignation des tailles de vêtements.
L'ISO 8559-1:2017 est destiné à être utilisé conjointement à la réglementation ou aux accords nationaux, régionaux ou internationaux afin d'assurer l'harmonisation dans la définition des groupes de population et de permettre la comparaison des ensembles de données anthropométriques.

The text of ISO 8559-1:2017 has been prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 133 "Clothing sizing
systems - size designation, size measurement methods and digital fittings” of the International
Organization for Standardization (ISO) and has been taken over as EN ISO 8559-1:2020 by Technical
Committee CEN/TC 248 “Textiles and textile products” the secretariat of which is held by BSI.
This European Standard shall be given the status of a national standard, either by publication of an
identical text or by endorsement, at the latest by June 2021, and conflicting national standards shall be
withdrawn at the latest by June 2021.
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of
patent rights. CEN shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.

Introduction
This document is the first of a three-part International Standard (ISO 8559-1, ISO 8559-2 and
ISO 8559-3). It comprises the definition and generation of anthropometric measurements that can be
used for the creation of size and shape profiles and their application in the field of clothing. It forms a
foundation for ISO 8559-2, Primary and secondary dimension indicators, and ISO 8559-3, Methodology for
creating body measurement tables and intervals. Reference is made to measurements and procedures in
ISO 7250-1.

Anthropometric definitions for body measurement
1 Scope
This document provides a description of anthropometric measurements that can be used as a basis for
the creation of physical and digital anthropometric databases. The list of measurements specified in
this document is intended to serve as a guide for practitioners in the field of clothing who are required
to apply their knowledge to select population market segments and to create size and shape profiles
for the development of all garment types and their equivalent fit mannequins. The list provides a
guide for how to take anthropometric measurements, as well as give information to clothing product
development teams and fit mannequin manufacturers on the principles of measurement and their
underlying anatomical and anthropometrical bases.
Annex A describes the use of the pictogram (standardized and modified) based on the selection of most
usual body dimensions used for clothing size designation.
This document is intended to be used in conjunction with national, regional or international
regulations or agreements to ensure harmony in defining population groups and to allow comparison
of anthropometric data sets.
