This document specifies requirements for the provision of assistive listening in audio, video and
multimedia systems and equipment. The requirements are of different kinds, because of the
diversity of the hardware concerned. Existing IEC standards for methods of measurement are
normatively referenced if they exist. Methods of measurement and performance requirements
are specified in IEC 63087-21.
This document does not apply to hearing aids. Also excluded are devices entirely worn on or in
the ear, which cannot be measured independently.

This part of IEC 60958 describes a serial, uni-directional, self-clocking interface for the
interconnection of digital audio equipment for consumer and professional applications.
It provides the basic structure of the interface. Separate documents define items specific to
particular applications.
The interface is primarily intended to carry monophonic or stereophonic programmes, encoded
using linear PCM and with a resolution of up to 24 bits per sample.
When used for other purposes, the interface is able to carry audio data coded other than as
linear PCM coded audio samples. Provision is also made to allow the interface to carry data
related to computer software, multimedia technologies, or signals coded using non-linear PCM.
The format specification for these applications is not part of this document.
The interface is intended for operation at audio sampling frequencies of 32 kHz and above.
Auxiliary information is transmitted along with the programme.

This part of IEC 60268 applies to transducers converting an electrical input signal into a
mechanical or acoustical output signal. However, if the electrical input terminals and the surface
of the radiator are accessible, this document can also apply to passive and active sound
systems such as loudspeakers, headphones, TV-sets, multi-media devices, personal portable
audio devices, automotive sound systems and professional equipment. This document
describes only electrical and mechanical measurements that help assess the transfer behaviour
of the device under test (DUT). This includes operating the DUT in both the small- and largesignal
domains. The influence of the target application's acoustical boundary conditions (e.g.
car interior) can also be considered in the physical evaluation of the sound system. Perception
and cognitive evaluations of the reproduced sound and the impact of perceived sound quality
are outside the scope of this document.
NOTE This document does not apply to microphones and other sensors. Implementation of this document does not
require access to the sound pressures generated in the near or far fields of the radiator. Directivity and other
characteristics describing the electro-acoustical transfer properties are described in IEC 60268-21, which covers
acoustical measurements.The practical application of the measurements for research and development (R&D), endof-
line testing (QC) and evaluation in the final target application (TA) is discussed in Annex A.

Sound systems for emergency purposes

This European Standard specifies the performance requirements for sound systems which are
primarily intended to broadcast information for the protection of lives within one or more specified
areas in an emergency. It also gives the characteristics and the methods of test necessary for the
specification of the system.
This European Standard applies to sound reinforcement and distribution systems to be used to effect
a rapid and orderly mobilization of occupants in an indoor or outdoor area in an emergency, including
systems using loudspeakers to broadcast voice announcements for emergency purposes and
attention-drawing or alarm tone signals.
This European Standard does not apply to emergency sound systems used for evacuation in case of
fire emergency, whether connected to a fire detection and fire alarm system or not.
NOTE 1 The use of the system for normal sound reinforcement and distribution systems purposes under nonhazardous
circumstances is not excluded.
It is recommended that the system, when used for emergency purposes, should form part of a
complete facility (equipment, operating procedures and training programmes) for the control of
emergencies.
NOTE 2 Sound systems for emergency purposes may be the subject of approval by relevant authorities.
