Overview

EN ISO 10619-2:2021 - "Rubber and plastics hoses and tubing - Measurement of flexibility and stiffness - Part 2: Bending tests at sub-ambient temperatures" is a CEN-adopted ISO standard that specifies laboratory methods to assess how rubber and plastic hoses and tubing behave when bent at temperatures below ambient. The document defines two stiffness measurement methods and one flexibility test, covering a wide range of bores and intended for material characterization, quality control and specification compliance.

Key topics and requirements

  • Scope: Tests apply to rubber and plastics hoses and tubing bent to a specified radius at sub-ambient temperatures; part of the ISO 10619 series.
  • Three test methods:
    • Method A - Stiffness test for non-collapsible hoses/tubing with bore ≤ 25 mm. Uses a torque wheel to measure bending torque as temperature is reduced from standard laboratory conditions.
    • Method B - Flexibility assessment for hoses/tubing with bore up to 100 mm. Bending around a mandrel at a specified sub-ambient temperature; suitable as a routine quality control test.
    • Method C - Stiffness test for non-collapsible hoses/tubing with bore ≥ 100 mm; measures stiffness at sub-ambient temperatures.
  • Apparatus and measurement:
    • Torque wheel arrangement (diameter = twice the minimum bend radius, or if unspecified, 12× nominal bore).
    • Strain gauge and recorder for torque measurement (example accuracy ±3% stated in the text).
    • Cooling container/agitator and suitable coolant (e.g., methanol/ethanol with dry ice) or gaseous coolants where equivalent results are obtained.
  • Test prerequisites: Conditioning and preparation procedures reference ISO 23529; terminology aligns with ISO 8330. Hydrostatic references (ISO 1402) may be relevant for related hose tests.
  • Reporting: Methods include defined procedures for expression of results and test reporting to ensure repeatability and comparability.

Applications and users

  • Who uses it:
    • Hose and tubing manufacturers - product development and specification verification.
    • Test laboratories - accredited mechanical and environmental testing.
    • Quality control engineers - routine batch testing and acceptance checks (Method B is explicitly suitable for QC).
    • OEMs and procurement teams - cold-environment selection and supplier compliance.
    • Regulators and standards bodies - harmonised test criteria for safety and performance.
  • Practical uses:
    • Verifying hose flexibility and stiffness for cold-weather applications (automotive, industrial hydraulics, cryogenic lines, outdoor installations).
    • Comparing formulations, constructions or reinforcements under sub-ambient conditions.
    • Establishing pass/fail criteria for production and incoming inspection.

The article discusses the SIST EN ISO 10619-2:2021 standard, which focuses on the measurement of flexibility and stiffness in rubber and plastics hoses and tubing at sub-ambient temperatures. It outlines three different methods for these measurements, depending on the size and collapsibility of the hoses and tubing. Method A is for non-collapsible hoses and tubing with a bore of up to 25mm, Method B is for hoses and tubing with a bore of up to 100mm, and Method C is for hoses and tubing with a bore of 100mm or greater, but only if they are non-collapsible. These methods provide means of evaluating the stiffness and flexibility of the hoses and tubing under specified sub-ambient temperature conditions, and can be used for quality control purposes.
